Cruise Control - Are there any new kits for Corvairs available?
Posted by: 63RedBrier ()
Date: May 05, 2017 03:22AM

Greetings! I'm planning on driving my wife's '65 Monza coupe 110/PG to the convention and I'd like to add cruise control in the next 2 months before the long drive. What is everyone using now-a-days? I couldn't find a listing on the Clark's website. Any help? Thanks a million! Greg

The Dakota Digital unit from Summit Racing is the unit I installed on my Lakewood before the Knoxville convention. Love it! Makes long distance trips MUCH more enjoyable.

'61 700 Lakewood 95 4 speed
'69 Monza Convert. 140 Auto.

Been aircooled since 1973

That's the one I'm planning on using on my project car. The matching speed sender attaches to the speedo and adds a couple inches to the speedo cable length.

I plan on mounting it in the trunk under the master cylinder, and running an extra long cable to the gas pedal lever in the tunnel. At this point, this is strictly guessing, but it seems to measure out like it might work.

Mark, as you've no doubt researched, make sure the speedometer junction can be made under the dash as required on a LM. My resolver is located right at the exit of the speedo drive gear on the axle, as mines on a EM.

I'm really NOT getting how attaching these "mechanical" kits to the speedometer cable has ANYTHING to do with holding the Corvair at a steady speed! The speedo cable is totally independent of any of the linkages on the engine or accelerator pedal. What say the experts! Thanks! Greg

Speedo adapter provides a speed signal to the controller to maintain car speed by adjusting engine rpm.

Designed a kit about 5 years ago using the GM System (Non-Vacuum) Servo type. Had 3 calls in 3 years, so I cancelled the project and removed from website. I think I asked $300 bucks.

Now that I have retired, I may bring this project back, but I have to have more interest than was shown last time. I don't have the money to throw away on this project like I did on EFI.

I installed a period correct Dana unit on my Corsa and it works great. I bought it on Ebay and had on trouble installing it. I did a detailed installation document that is posted on northern-California-corvairs.com web site under the "Project" tab. Let me know if anyone wants more info.

Wagonmaster, have checked the clearance on a '67, which has extra bracing under the dash, and it clears. I did have to shorten the supplied square driveshaft so the pieces would go together with the minimum length possible. But it all seems to work. Also, the correct stalk control assembly even worked on a tele column.

I have a 'period correct-ish' Dana / Sears unit sitting on my workbench in the garage right now.

Its for sale. Cheap.

Is it the style that uses driveshaft magnets and a sensor for speed input?

Wagonmaster, if you're talking to me, no. It's a self-contained sensor that screws onto the back of the speedo and the speedo cable screws onto it. It's their sender #SEN-01-1 GM transmission sender package. It adds 3 5/16" to the speedo cable length.

That would work in an EM / FC..... but I think it will be a problem with an LM...cable is too short and not enough room to flex.

Compucruise

I sold and installed these back in the 1980s. I had one in my 1966 Corsa 140 at the time and it was the peak of coolness! A computer in my car!!!
The speed sensor was 4 magnets epoxy glued to the half-shaft.
Worked great.

I've got another new one in the box now. May install it into another my Red/Greenbrier someday

Matt, what are you talking about?

All, we're getting some cross-talk on two different subjects, We all need to address our responses to the proper questions.

Matt, OK I see that now.

To answer your concern, the unit I'm using ADDS length to the cable, not take away from it. If anything, I'm going to have to compensate somewhere for the added length.
