Dyno Testing Tom Knoblauch's "Bill Thomas Tribute" Top end kit
Posted by: Shaker455 ()
Date: April 21, 2017 12:30PM

I've been working closely with Tom Knoblauch on my custom 140Hp engine build up and we decided to test his top end kit on the engine dyno and record the results.

The kit consists of:
Tom's Custom prepped Signature "Bill Thomas Tribute" heads w/dual carb pads.
A pair of Weber 2-bbls
Air filters
His custom fabbed intakes
Carb linkage kit

My combo is a +.030" over 140Hp with TRW forged flatops
Custom Crowler Hyd cam designed around my stock 140 head flow.
Compression is 11.0:1 pump gas combo.

The CR with Tom's heads may be lower but I have to CC his combustion chambers to determine the volume.

I just completed dyno testing a 472 ci Pontiac on his dyno that made 611 Hp & 601 Tq.
Here's pic with him & my build

Are they 140 heads or small valve heads with the 140 sized valves as Tom typically produces?

Also, if you haven't assembled your engine make sure you triple check that Crower cam.
Dave Motohead, Phil Dally and myself have found that their indexing location for the cam gear key way on Corvair cams is off 2 full teeth.....and mine was a custom grind as well.

Thanks Lee,
I am going to degree the cam as I have an adjustable gear set.

A few years ago I had a Lunati VooDoo series cam for a Pontiac and I had a 3 position chain to degree with.
Key slot on cam was cut in wrong position and I had to buy a 9-key chain to correct for it...so yes I get it!...lol

When I called them and Talked to Mr Crower about their Key way location being 2 teeth off, I was told "That is why you degree a cam" When I told them, "If you put your keyway slot in the correct place like all other cams the timing will be correct and line up with the timing marks on the gears" I was then told to piss off! no more Crower cams for me. angry smiley

Well they got a good guy in there now named Shane that has turned customer service around.
Tom and myself have been dealing with him and he actually left for a short time but now back.
The other guy who did work there is gone and he was pretty bad for the company.

Well let us know if the key slot is in the correct place on your cam? Interested to know if they fixed it? think Lee's cam was done recently and it was off. Also I talked to old man Crower himself.

I will Dave.
I know I saw a Youtube vid with Tom Stark and he mentioned the same thing.
But he also said the owner was quick to call back and offered to replace it.
Tom had also had a adjustable cam gear to correct.

==============================================================

Does he correct for Altitude / density, Temp, etc. or just Gross?

Either way if your engine with fan makes 140 hp FW that will be very good.

I do not think the adjustable cam gear will correct a cam 2 teeth off, I think you need to degree it straight up and see where its at? and if it is off 2 teeth like the rest of them jump it the 2 teeth and then degree it till it matches the card, then use the adjustable gear to advance or retard the cam the way you want.

I believe 1 tooth is equal to 14 degrees. I had a brand new Melling(I think) with the slot exactly one tooth off, and retarded.

I seem to remember 1 tooth being 7 degrees, I think I remember the 2 teeth off was 14 degree, I have it written down somewhere.
