I've been into Corvairs for 40 years and thought I had heard everything. Last year at a show I had a guy spend probably 30 minutes bugging me about why would I go to all the trouble and expense to move the engine to the rear. Because he knew for a fact that GM never made a rear engine car. There was absolutely no way he was believing my Corsa was stock.

They walk and breed......

Hey 64turbo, I hope you aren't referring to those of us posting on this thread.
Although it wouldn't be the first time for me.

Once upon a time when I was sitting in a Texas high school classroom in the fall of
'69, I heard fellow students discussing going to Chicago later that night. I
disregarded the "better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak up and
remove all doubt" rule and asked them "how far is it to Chicago from here?"
After a long period of laughter, the response was "we're going to see Chicago Transit
Authority at Will Rodgers Auditorium tonight you idiot!" Duh, I wasn't valedictorian
material anyway.

Forty eight years has healed the wound to my psyche, but the scar remains.

At a car show, I had a self-professed 25 year retired mechanic tell me how all Covairs were four-cylinders, except for the "Corsica", which had six.

1961 rampside with a 65 / 67 110 engine, car four speed.
Now I have 1965 convertible as well, got it running in June, autocrossed in July 2016 at the convention!

I was at a car show with my Lakewood and 2 people said they never saw a VW like that, and 1 asked why I had a Corvair, since they were banned from the highway.

That's funny! No FaceBook, true, but Year Books! Your photo is in there with "Here's Phill- fool thought Chicago was a city!!
Only good part of High School for me was finding a EM Monza in the parking lot, meeting the owner and becoming buddies - he let me drive it and I've been infected ever since!

Don't forget about the EDSEL wth the transmission push buttons on the steering wheel center - OH WHAT COULD GO WRONG (and did).

I have encountered may of these folks too. But, for a story from the brighter side of the uninformed or merely stupid.

Last year I took the Spyder to the local SCCA Autocross a couple times and had to go through the quick, but important safety check. They do a quick ball joint check, look for any leaks from steering or engine, and then they open your hood to check that your throttle will return as it is supposed to.

Young guy in his late 20s - maybe early 30s, checks the suspension/steering and for leaks, then stands at the trunk and asks to do the throttle check. I say, "It's back here." and I open the hood. He says "Cool, like a Porsche." and looks for the throttle. After a few moments he turns to me and says, "Okay, I have no clue. Where is it?".

Though it was great that he didn't try to act like the "know it alls" we often run into.

I have been asked if my car was turbocharged (140hp) and when I said that it was not they asked what is the fan for. The one I like the best is when someone tells me that the Corvair engine looks like a lawn mower engine. I tell them that it only mows two narrow strips really short and would you like me to show you in your yard. This is when their friends usually start laughing.

I looked at a Corvair for sale many years back. It was advertised as a turbocharged engine. When I got there I saw the 2 carb. engine in it. I asked the seller "where is the turbo"? He pointed to the cooling fan and said "right there".

I looked at a Corvair for sale a couple of years ago (and I bought the car). It was advertised as a 1965 Monza Sport Sedan with a 140 4 speed. The deck lid emblem said 140 and some of the engine shrouds were indeed from a 140. But the engine had only 2 carbs. I told the seller this was not the 140 engine and explained how I knew that. He listened, looked at the deck lid emblem again, and stated "it is a 140 engine".
