140 carb troubles

Still running down why my new build 140 stalls out leaving from a stop. It will run for an hour at idle or at highway speed, when i leave a stop light or sign I have to flutter the gas to keep from stalling.

Today i noticed it felt like it wasnt getting any gas. it was suggested a new kit with accelerator pumps would likely be the fix.Simply put I cannot afford clarks 60 bucks per kit.

Any suggestions what type of accelerator pump leather or rubber I should get?

Thanks for the help!

Doesn't Clarks or Cal Corvairs or John Sweet or Lon sell just the pumps?

I cannot rebuild carbs any more with my wrists and hands. the guy who will do the work wants clarks kits with ethanol whatever pumps. Says the older style pumps dont swell with ethanol.

I am pretty sure Clarks sells the accel pumps, or at least the piston cup.

I've purchased carb kits from three of the aforementioned vendors (never heard of the guy John) and the accelerator pumps are all exactly the same.

I'm pretty sure they all get the parts from the same manufacturer.

How could there be more than one manufacturer of parts with such a small market?

Most have no idea what it means, another passion is water skiing, Moomba is my ski boat, named after the first pro tournament every year that it was built for, the Moomba Masters in Australia, 32 is my best slalom pass at 32 off, was only at 30 mph on a wide ride ski, best complete pass at 34 mph was 28 off. Now I have you more confused.spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

When I was a kid water skiing was big on our lake. Perhaps 30 or 40 boats on weekends in 1960.

pulling at 30 mph? pretty slow isnt it? hard for acrobatics at that speed?

I had fun looking up the tournament on google, thanks!

As answered above, the vendors are the answer. Any of those listed in this thread are good

Rebuild kits don't generally include the floats.

What timing! I am right now waiting on 3 rubber cups that should be here Wednesday, from Clark's. I also made a little tool that pops them right on! Take a Bic-type pen. The ones that are usually white with black tip. Pull the tip/ink part off & toss it. Take the white 'straw' looking part & cut it to abt 2". I used a tiny bit of spit on the pen part eye popping smiley , and the cup slides right on & into place on the assembly.

Sometimes when the carburetors have been removed in favor of a 4 barrel, some of the original mounting studs, insulator blocks and linkage pieces get lost. It's the small stuff that's difficult to find sometimes. Proper synchronizing so everything is working together is important too. Getting carburetor kits is the easy part.
I'm a long ways from either Moorhead or Duluth and I've got plenty to do, not trying to drum up business, just thought I'd weigh in.
Vern Ehlers south of Detroit Lakes may be able to help the Moorhead fellow. He's got a lot of Corvair stuff, I'm not sure how much work he's doing these days, he does like to visit and help. He's sort of the Lone Ranger of Corvair guys out there.
Even though the Duluth/Superior Corvair club has disbanded, they still have a network of Corvair buddies. Nice folks up there.
140 4 carburetors can be a little persnickety which is why folks remove them in favor of a 4-barrel. Unfortunately that set-up has it's own different persnicketyness usually due to the fuel not staying suspended in the air while flowing through and changing direction within a foot and a half of cold piping. The original 4 carburetors are a good set-up with some time and dedication to get them working together once they are clean and installed. Patience and perseverance are key. If one of the carburetors is misbehaving, it's difficult sometimes to figure out which one. Not to mention that it may not be carburetor trouble...

Chaplain Bob........

Mmay I suggest that you do some diagnostic work before just replacing the accel pumps.

1) Remove the air filters and with the engine OFF. just activate the accelerator several times. You should get a good squirt of gas each time.

2) Follow the shop manual and see that the fuel pump is delivering the correct amount of fuel to the carbs.

3) borrow some known good carbs and install them for a comparison on how well the engine runs.

4) Check the vacuum advance for proper working. Remove and plug the hose and see if that makes any difference in the operation.

Jim Bob and all:

I was in the old head of the lakes corvair club and there are still a bunch of great guys around. Peter Prudden is doing some radio/ mp3 and speaker work on my car, he is also tuning the engine and will rebuild the primaries. Seems one side gets virtually no gas on start or while leaving stop when cold. There is also a strong gas smell from the other side.

Kurt! great idea!

The fuel pump is older, well get it working then ill get a rebuilt one. I understand AirTex is out for a while, perhaps going back to mexico???

Soon very soon I hope to take ot for a ride....

Thanks all!
