vin on engine
Posted by: g2schmidt ()
Date: April 04, 2017 10:11AM

Hello to all

I inherited a 1966 corvair convertible from my dad, He has 4 corvairs, but I remember switching engines. How can I tell which engine is the original? We have put the 140 heads on all of them.

No vins on 66's

Compare the build date on the engine and the car's Fisher body plate build date...

The engine should be just slightly older..

There would not be a VIN on a '66 engine. That was only in th last couple of years of production.
There should be a code on the block near The oil filler. It would most likely be a two letter code.
I think there is listing in the facts at the top of the forum.

The cylinder head numbers will tell you what year the heads are. However many have been swapped around over the decades.
The crankcase code as mentioned will key you in somewhat also.
s said there is no matching numbers to the vehicle ID.

I borrowed these photo's from other threads on this site.

This should give you a better idea what to look for regarding Engine Block ID Codes.

On 1968 & 1969 Corvair engines, there are usually a few smaller numbers (maybe 8 and one letter ?) that follow what is pictured. These are the numbers that would have matched the V.I.N. if it were a "Numbers Matching" block for that particular car.

I hope this is of some help.

If you want the correct engine, please provide these answers.

Is the 66 a Monza or Corsa.

Then list the engine IDs for the engines you have.

As stated above, it is a 7 digit code starting with the letter T, then 4 numbers, then 2 letters.

If we can't default it from there, we will need the trim tag date code as well, but I bet we can determine it from the info you provide.

An RM block 140 came belongs in a Monza not a Corsa.

See the Clark's identification charts I posted below.

Guys, head numbers mean nothing right now, they will later. Read the original post where all heads were changed to the 140's!

All you need to know is what model of car you had/have and what did the deck lid emblem say if any and the look up the suffix code for your engine. The other identifier to get the "correct" engine would be to look at the build date on the car and then pick the block with the correct suffix and date code no more than 3 months earlier. All engines start with a "T"

With the deck lid emblem that is self explanatory if it says 110 or 140 but no emblem would be a 95 HP. And since you say it is a 66 the sheet metal top cover bolts will all be 3/8-16 bolts. Then you can look for the correct heads if you want.

Engine = T 0128 RM = Monza 140 built on January 28 (could be 1965 or 1966)

Car = 10767 (Corsa Convertible) delivered to customer on 6-13-66

This car does not match the engine. Corsa vs. Monza. Engine is early considering the delivery date.

As Craig stated, the engine that is currently in the car is not correct.

Based on your VIN ending in 154608, your car was assembled in mid Febuary of 1966.

So your engine code would start with T02**(the asterisks are build day 01-29)(then 2 letters for the engine code)

Your car is a Corsa, so it should have either the 140 or 180 if an original turbo car...

You have a few options for engine codes...but should be one of these 4

1966 140 manual = RB
1966 140 manual w AC = RR
1966 180 = RL
1966 140 w smog = RT

The Fisher body tag will tell whether the car was a turbo or not.

Look in our FAQ's for the location of the Hidden VIN...or search!! gg

The markings on the differential is where you find out if that case originally had posi..

To TEST....

raise both rear wheels...

Turn one in either direction

If the other side turns the same direction POSI if opposite ...no posi..
