Need parts to finish 65 Front end unit
Posted by: SteveH ()
Date: March 27, 2017 08:30AM

I picked this sweet front end up last night from a local corvair guy!

Now I need to find the rest of the components to complete it. It needs to be complete drum to drum before I can swap it out (long story involving a rabid HOA)

My original plan was to strip, paint, and rebuild, but this one looks nice. We will see after I give it a good clean tonight.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help! (shipping is OK too)

You need to make a list of parts you need so others can possibly help.

Where are you Located? That would be a hefty package for me as I have all of the pieces. Cost for shipping might be prohibitive.

Ok. That takes my parts out of the running.

Get with California Corvairs with the list to get a price of what used prices are. I remember backing plates for the rear are about $40.

I have all of it too but I agree with Al, the shipping will kill you. I am near Portland and it will still probably be more than the parts are worth. Go to a closer shop like CA Corvairs and see about buying the parts.

Thanks folks!

I will leave this here for a few days and see if anyone closer come up. I am doing a 6,000 mile road trip this summer, so if I do not have the bits by July, I will see who I stop and visit!!

There are two different front spindles used on the late models. The change was sometime in '65. The difference is with the brake shoe anchor pin. The 1st design used 1/2"-20 threads and the later ones used 5/8"-18. The pin has a shoulder on it that also changed in dia. and I believe the shoulder was larger on the 1st design by just a little bit. The backing plates are also slightly different due to the hole size where the shoulder of the pin goes thru it. It would probably be a good idea to check both sides in case something got switched over the years.

Thanks Rex, I didn't know about the 1/2-20 vs 5/8-18 bolts. Is this where the crossmember bolts to body?

I bought all my front end replacement parts from the usual Corvair vendors.
However, here's another option I found:

When pressing the new bushings in the upper and lower A-arms, you need a couple of
special tools, i.e., spacers to prevent bending. You can fabricate your own or
get them from Clark's: part# C5353F and 5353C.

6000 mile road trip? Tell us where you are going and which of us you will be near? It will probably be many of us though you could do that many miles in Colorado and see some of it.

There are three bolts per side that attach the crossmember to the hard points.
When it is time to remove the cross member from your vehicle, you might consider
a dousing with penetrating oil, especially the two per side that traverse the
boxed hollow frame to fixed nuts on the upper side. These two have extremely
limited access unless you remove the gas tank.

You don't want to shear these bolts when removing or you're SOL. There's only about
an inch gap between the frame and gas tank. I used the straw on the spray can to
apply a good amount of penetrating oil well in advance and they came out without a problem.

No, the anchor pin is the big fastener at the top of the spindle inside the brake drum. Generic pic:

Depending on your facility and equipment, due to weight considerations, you might
want to install the rehabbed crossmember by itself. Then accomplish the rest of
the buildup on the installed crossmember. Also used a different technique than the
Service Manual to install the coil springs. I borrowed a coil spring compressor from
Autozone and installed the inner end of the lower control arm last as pictured.

Phill - Yeah, I wish I could do that. I live under the "protection" of an HOA that does not allow ANY working on vehicles in public view.... sigh. I have to build the entire unit in my shop and then take the car and front end to the local college parking lot to do the swap out....

Timothy - Our Road Trip this year is from The SF Bay area to Western NY (I am from Jamestown) and then to NYC . We will most likely be taking the south route east and the north rout back west. We are leaving on July 30th. I am picking up a treadle sewing machine in Tennessee on the way, but no other stops have been planned yet.
