Pro-touring coupes
Posted by: vwbusman66 ()

In the last week, I have seen quite a few pictures of "pro-touring" (they looked like it, at least) LM's.
Does anyone here have any pictures of their own pro-touring style cars? I have been day-dreaming about building a 65 LOS 500 coupe near me as a pseudo-lowered and slightly racy car. The only downside with it is that it is a PG sad smiley.

James...let me introduce you to SuperVair.

506 cube Mark IV Big Block Chevy mid-engine.

With Mike's Super Glide and Winters Quick Change.

Just about as Pro Street as a Corvair could ever be.

Phil,
Supervair is what I would build if I had the engineering know-how (hopefully after college) and the deep pockets required.

I really look forward to seeing more progress in the coming months. I really like that last picture with the taillights... I had never noticed they were "frenched" like that. That might be a touch I add later on.

I will say it is much easier and cheaper to buy one already done.

That is what I did this time...I built my Crown car in the nineties.

The Crown car was fast and quick but SuperVair makes your eyes bleed.

Matt, pardon my ignorance, but
What is the difference between pro street and pro touring?
I had been under the impression pro touring was more "curves" oriented, whereas pro street was more "straight line" oriented.

I'm genuinely curious... I have heard them used interchangeably as well as independent classes.

Pro Street was a term coined in the 80's during the tubbing and super wide rear tire fad that was popular in Hot Rod and Car Craft. These were typically drag race inspired cars that were built to look like the then current Pro Stock racers.
Pro Touring was a term coined in the 90's for cars built for driving. Typically they would be older cars that had modern upgrades such as efi, overdrive transmissions, air conditioning, handling and braking modifications to make an older car perform like a modern car.
The earliest one that I remember was Mark Stielow's 1st generation Camaros that were in all the magazines.
