1965 Monza worth it?
Posted by: BrianTom ()

I'm traveling a town over to look at a 110hp 4sp Monza. Seller says it has had new carbs, new brake lines, and new push rods. Interior is fairly thrashed. Can't tell about the rockers from the pictures, so going to see in person. Wants $2500. He says it'll run and make the drive back to where I live about 20 miles away. Most of my experience comes with the EM...any suggestions on the LMs? I'm in Alabama, so I expect some rust, but hoping you can't fit a baseball through the rockers.

Thanks,

Brian

Take the "Pre-buy checklist" with you.... located in our FAQ's a PDF

Best to print it out an make notes while inspecting and then go home and think about it!

Is that rust above left head light bezel (dark spot)? Also left rear quarter looks rusted. Need more photos to really tell. Why no close ups exterior or the interior and engine interior? No much info in ad really does require more thought in the inspection and test drive.

Take the body lines drawings (in the FAQs for the LMs). Make up everything you see. That and the Pre-buy checklist will give you something to think on when deciding an actual negotiating price.

Any chances he can send you more pictures? My thoughts are your just going to need to go look at it to be sure. Take the check list Matt suggested and go from there.$2500 may well be too high if you find the interior trashed, more rust, engine trouble etc, etc. Good luck hope it works out for you.

Good runner & driving for $2500? If not rusty, I'd say that's an OK price.

Steve sez: Agreed!! Pictures are worthless, since it is so close go look at the car with your own eyes.

I went to look at it and drove it today. The gentleman selling it said he'd bought it about 4 months ago, started fixing the mechanicals, and now has health issues. The brakes work, the car runs sort of rough, but I think the carbs are out of adjustment, and he said he'd never had time to tune the carbs and had just rebuilt them and installed them. It pulled to the right the entire time driving, so it was fun, but the steering was pretty loosy goosy as well. The 4 spd. worked well and was really crisp. I didn't see any door sag.

So the front seats aren't original. The rear seems to be and folds down. Not sure if that's a 65 thing or not. Carpet rough at best. The VIN number was correct for a 65 Monza coupe.

So the rust. There were a couple of quarter sized holes in the right front fender, one dime sized one above the driver side head lights. There was some rust at each back corner, and some here and there around the rear window. There was some flaked off paint on the rockers with a different color underneath. I couldn't tell if it's bondo or not because in the gas tank lid door, there's also that same color...looks like maybe a respray over the original (it it was, it was a long time ago.)

Anyway, I'm still thinking about it, but it's not a $2500 car...at least not to me. There's still work to be done to dial it in and then all the little details. Maybe a $1000 car?

I took pictures, so I'll try to post those later tonight. Thanks for all the input.

Front right side hole.

Rust behind the rear tire. Similar on both sides.

Rear Windsor Rust.

Rocker...bondo or just old paint?

Fuel Door..what's going on here?

Rear of the car. Other side looks much better.
