Maxxis MA-1 185/80 R13 tires possibly out of production?
Posted by: TerribleTed ()
Date: March 18, 2017 08:26AM

There may or may not be any validity in this BUT? Yesterday I purchased a set of Maxxis MA-1 185/80 R13 tires from an online vendor. I called the vendor to verify stock levels before placing my order. The lady at the other end of the phone was very familiar with these particular tires and told me that they sold a lot of them to classic car owners and restorers. She went on to tell me that Maxxis ceased production of these a couple months ago. IF this is true availability could be a problem in even the very near future? Just figured I would share this info with the community. If you need some it might be a good time to buy them.

Call Maxxis!!

I've heard this a dozen times in the last couple of years from folks who called tire dealers.

As discussed here Maxxis runs off batches of 185/80X13 tires so you get dry spells before they run off the next batch. Tire dealers say "We can't get them anymore". Then a month or so later they are available.

Hopefully this is the case.

I also thought of this as a possibility. In any case we need to keep buying them out so they have incentive to make another batchsmiling smiley

We have plenty of these in stock, Maxxis may be out of inventory since we take most of the inventory when these come in. Here is the link to these for you.

Just got off the phone with my local tire guy.
He has 4 of the Maxxis coming Wednesday, $436 mounted and balance.

Yes, Virginia, 13" tires still do exist.

Thanks,

Mike

At the SEMA show in Las Vegas last fall, I stopped by the Maxxis Tire Company display. I found the most Senior manager there and asked him about the 185/80-13 tire and it's long term supply outlook. He told me then that the on-going sales do support continued production and that there were NO plans to discontinue the tire in that size. Things could change but I would not get too worried.

I bought an extra set of 5 a couple of years ago to just have them. I am not sure if I will use them in the next 5 years, but it is good to have a spare set.

That's good news, Seth. I wonder if that's the same guy (@Maxxis' SEMA booth) I talked to back '09 or '10 who got this size restarted after we talked and he called "the factory" to see if the mold was still viable. (It was).

I just wish they would rework their website to the size was findable. It's there but doesn't come up when you search by size.

True that about the website search. I only found them due to a helpful direct link from a forum post.

I don't ever remember driving a Corvair with 13 inch tires, my first one was in the 90s and it had 14s then. My cars now have 14 and 15.

Don,

I hear you loud and clear but I stumbled on a 59K original with the N96 Magnesium Wheel Covers and don't want to make the change away from originality at this time.

Thanks,

I definitely appreciate the situation, there are a lot of cars that it's just wrong to change stuff. My two have been modified mostly cosmetically and bolt on, They could both be made stock fairly easily with the exception that I don't have a Turbo motor or wheels of course. I have the rest of the stuff though, stored inside and protected.

Don, you youngster! I was driving them when we could buy B78-13 bias plies. Before them there p-metric sizes. Who wanted to spend money for larger wheels, when the 13" tires were ~$20 each? Of course recaps could be bought for less..... Even snow-capseye popping smiley

I hear you Frank, I'm 56 now, definitely in the young crowd of Corvair drivers. I do remember recaps for $9.99, even had a car with a set. When I was in college I spun a rod bearing in my 67 Nova street racing one weekend and didn't have time to make a repair doing school full time and working part time and my Dad bought me a worn out Duster that had new recaps, drove it until I could fix the Nova, sold it and gave Dad the money, I think we made a little on it.

The first set of tires I purchased as a teenager were C70-13 whitewalls! Wider and lower than those silly B78-13s.grinning smiley
