Hats off to The Corvair Society of America for making this downloadable. I suggest everyone download the NHTSA report. Put the "unsafe" myths to bed. Spread the truth that your Corvair is safe.

As much as 10 years ago I had some flyers that I kept with me for car shows, etc.

When I defended the car, they all had nay=say etc. so I gave them a flyer.

Not one of them ever walked away retracting their mindless comments or saying something like I never knew that.

All good stuff, but I suspect there at some that will never change their minds.

Now........I have noticed recently [last 5 years or so] that there have been less negative, and lots more positive things from viewers. So maybe it worked after all.

The main point of the NHTSA investigation is this: The handling characteristics of early Corvairs were somewhere in the middle in comparison to its peers in the marketplace - namely the Falcon, Valiant, Beetle and Renault Dauphine.

NHTSA admitted that the transition from understeer to oversteer could trip-up drivers doing emergency maneuvers, but on the other hand, its ultimate cornering limits were slightly higher than the competition. NHTSA's investigation also revealed that early Corvair accidents were correlated to driver age - and when the statistics were age-adjusted, they were in-line with the other cars.

That's not to say you can't get in trouble with an early Corvair - we've all seen photos of Corvair wrecks. Just like we've seen photos of wrecks involving all makes and models.

Go and visit the CORSA website, as Noel suggested, and download the NHTSA report. Like any scientific investigation, it's on the dry side, but the thoroughness of the investigation is quite impressive.

Its really not about liking a car as much as it is factual information. That is kinda of a pet peeve for me. Its kinda silly and a waste of time having to listen to all unsafe/Nader BS when it was simply wrong and proven wrong by engineers and safety experts. That part of Corvair history never gets promoted and most people dont even know about the NHTSA report. Sadly, many new Corvair owners do not know either.
I have liked my Corvairs plenty. I started with my first one 34 years ago. I remember when schoolmates came over their fathers would tell stories of Corvairs that would lift their nose off the ground and flip through the air. I have had plenty of of the comments through the years and I engage to let folks know the truth. The NHTSA report is a nice piece to have around for those moments when someone wants to challenge. I think facts are important regarding the Corvair. It is been the subject of controversy for 80% of its lifetime. This controversy shadows its achievements as an innovative machine of many design firsts. Isn't it of benefit to the Corvair community to talk of all the positives like turbo-charging, rally winning, uni-body, Yenko SCCA champion, fully independent suspension, 4-carbs, John Fitch and turbo flat six before porsche, rather than wasting breath on another Nader "unsafe" comment? I know it will always be there. Someone will always have something to say but as owners we can can change that a little at a time. I know many of us have put the Nader stuff to bed and like to shrug it off. Im not there yet and as the Corvair community continues to grow its more important everyday that the facts be presented. Remember, we are not the only people who enjoy Corvairs and we wont be here forever. My son will drive a Corvair and I bet his will to. Hopefully with some education my grandson will never have to listen to stuff my son has already heard. Maybe he will never have to suffer a grown man telling him that his dads car killed more people than any car made. My son at 9 has already had to deal with this. It would be a breath of fresh air for the next generation of Vairkids to just enjoy and not defend.
