Subaru water-cooled flat 4 in a 69 Monza??
Dear forum, please excuse my first posting here is like 30 years late as I’ve spent my life loving the make! If Bill Gates wanted one of the above built, could it be done and by whom I wonder?

Always,
slakka

I’m in N.J. 57 yrs old. Back around 77 I passed on a pristine 69 Monza 140 4 Speed low mileage for under a grand. Went instead for a 68 Dodge Charger RT. Don’t rub it in guys!

Sorry, I can not help adding my two cents. Well then the car will not be a CorVAIR, but we have had enough opinions on non-Corvair and non-Chevy motor transplants that you could start another forum.

It is still a free country and you can do anything you want, well almost, that any state DMV will approve. I have been warned that even a V8 transplant in my S10 would technically be against our state's DMV regs.

The Corvair motor is one of the unique features of a Corvair.

The '69s are our models last year and maybe worth saving?

Forever Air!

Nothing wrong with transplanting another motor. The car will still be a corvair and many have done various engine swaps over the years. To each their own. That subaru swapped car will easily make more power with more reliability than any corvair engine ever can.

No objection from me on engine swaps as you can see in my sig line. Welcome to CCF and keep us updated on your progress.

Introduce yourself to Whenlm64 at the swap meet, Bob is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

Yes.....what j3m said, I get a kick watching the car shows on TV where they spend more time on the phone ordering kits for the projects then actually fabricating partsgrinning smiley,,LOL There is some FAMOUS guy( forget his shop name) but all he seems to do is destroy beautifully restored 1958-1964 full size Chevys with air bag kits and GAY wheels and tires. Very sad sad smileythese cars are ruined forever sad smiley No talent, just LOTS of $$$$$$

On the other hand, think of the fun you will have solving all of those engineering problems, and what you could end up with if it is done right.

But do be prepared to spend a lot more than it will ever be worth. The chance of ever seeing that money again will be very, very small.

So if you are Bill Gates under a pseudonym, then go for it!

I'm not offended slakka.

In regards to modernizing a 69 it depends on how much you want to spend.

You could swap out the carbs for fuel injection, around $1600 for the system Clarks sells.

Change the distributor out for an electronic one.

Upgrade the drum brakes for discs, front or all around.
Various vendors.

These changes will modernize the 69.

Hope this helps.

IIRC it's close to the same weight... and the radiator up front will help balance the car..

All part of the engineering that goes into a custom build..

Why it costs $$$ having someone else do it..

Well slakka ... IMO, if you are set on using a ater-cooled Subaru, instead of the 4 cylinder, I'd go for the 6 cylinder Subaru & a 5 speed Subaru transaxle with a SubiGears reverse cut ring & pinion so you can run it with the engine in the back!!! It would still look quite a bit like a 6 cylinder Corvair to the un-trained eye & though you could add a turbo, the Subie Six doesn't really need it!!! Price-wise, it wouldn't be much different than a Subie Four, but lts more torque & hp!!! The gearing in the Subie transaxle would be pretty much ideal too!!! You could even use the Subie automatic transaxle too, as Subie Gears has a reverse cut R&P for it too!!! Good Luck & most importantly have FUN FUN FUN!!!
BTW... I'm an "air-cooled guy" & after much thought, I'd build a 3.1 big bore Corvair & run it!!! If you want to spend some $$$$ & upgrade it, go for a fuel injection system & an electronic ignition system!!!

Have Fun, Fun, Fun... ManxManiac
