FOUND!! : LM Rear Wheel Spindle

Does anyone have a used/damaged LM rear wheel spindle available? I am hoping to make a bearing shim tool by having the bearing surfaces turned for a bearing slip fit. As long as the shaft is straight, with good threads, I really don't care about the condition.

My buddy James made this one for us to use, work's great, I have them laying all over the place, will count them up and if I have a Odd number might be able to set you up, I am going on a Rebuilding spree in a week or so, But if someone else gets you one first go for it, I am slow sometimes, spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Dave, that sounds good. It would be nice not having to use a yoke. I will keep you posted if something else comes up but it seems a good investment, if you have one available, since the bearings will need to be maintained. Good choice of beer!

I have the Kent-Moore tool called out in the manual and in more detail in the 66 supplement. Expanded procedures of the supplements instructions are located in the FAQs, which Gerg worked out and I assembled from his info.

I have 4 spare spindles, but they are in good condition. I would be very hesitant to have them made useless and unavailable for the Vair family, if someone needed a good one.

Something difficult about honing out two test bearings?

Frank, as I understand there can be differences in bearings. Al, I agree and would prefer not having to sacrifice a good spindle that may very well benefit someone in the future.

I have a new honed out bearing that I have been using. The differences in the bearings are .0005 NOT .005. I have been using the honed bearing for a long time with no issues. That way you set up your axle stub and not one that CAN have up to .002 tolerance difference. And you only need to hone 1 bearng and that is the inner one. I always hand pack the outer bearing, takes a few but I get it through the rollers.

Here is a typical bearing tolerance chart,
Tolerance values in 0.0001 inch Bore Diameter (d) Bore
Tolerance
(Δdmp) Radial Runout (Kia) Width Tolerance (ΔBS)
mm inch all single bearing paired bearings
over incl. over incl. high low max. high low
0.6 2.5 0.0236 0.0984 0 -3 4 0 -16 -
2.5 10 0.0984 0.3937 0 -3 4 0 -47 -98
10 18 0.3937 0.7087 0 -3 4 0 -47 -98
18 30 0.7087 1.1811 0 -4 5 0 -47 -98
30 50 1.1811 1.9685 0 -4.5 6 0 -47 -98
50 80 1.9685 3.1496 0 -6 8 0 -59 -150
80 120 3.1496 4.7244 0 -8 10 0 -79 -150
120 180 4.7244 7.0866 0 -10 12 0 -98 -197
180 250 7.0866 9.8425 0 -12 16 0 -118 -197
250 315 9.8425 12.4016 0 -14 20 0 -138 -197
315 400 12.4016 15.7480 0 -16 24 0 -157 -248

I know it is a little hard to decipher the chart above but if you look at the column that says max and then the first line, even the first 3 lines you are looking at a .0004" max bore tolerance and the thickness tolerance, in another chart, is down to .00015, count the zeros. The .0004 is less than a half thousandth. So when you say bearings are different make sure you know that for sure. There is more tolerance in the axle stub and housing than there is in bearing manufacturing.

Ken, are you saying you hand pack the outer bearing, press it onto the spindle then measuring the bearing clearance using the honed inner? If so, are there any concerns in measuring with grease packed into the outer?

Brice - a buddy machined a used spindle (damaged) to use as a slip fit assembly like davemotohead has. It works well. Per Steve's G's comments I shim them to 0.002" WITHOUT GREASE. Then pack and assemble on the regular spindle.

The spindle has NO impact on shimming, only the spindle housing with races, bearings, collar, and shim(s) which must be kept as a set for final assembly. BTW - Torque to spec to check clearances on the slip fit set up assembly!!! Also use a NEW castle nut on final assembly. The threads of the castle nut take a beating when torqued to spec.

I have this wheel assembly I took apart and looking into making it a tool for future rear hub rebuilds. Anyone know how much to shave off to make it slip fit?

Just use emory cloth until the bearing is a slip fit!

My hubs are now shimmed and back together. When unpacked they were shimmed to .00225 and .00275, roughly. With them packed and reassembled on the car they seem a little loose to me with the car on jack stands while lifting the bottom of the wheel. With the wheel hanging all the clearance is on one side of the bearings so maybe they normally feel loose. I can definitely feel the play but am certain of the clearances when shimming them. Is it normal to be able to feel the clearance like this?

Brice look to see if you are rocking the assembly into the diff. Watch half shaft for inward movement. It is tough to feel .003".

Steve, I just checked my hubs again and I can feel movement in the half shafts which seems to be linear rather than lateral. So, I think you are on the money with the inward movement thought. It seems effortless to feel the play. It must be very hard to determine bearing clearance with the hubs installed. Thanks again...

There is some motion at 3 and 9 o'clock but not nearly as much.

Years ago it was reported the Ultra-Van folks were trying 0.001" spindle bearing clearance. In theory the tighter the more load the bearing can withstand - only one problem. You need clearance to allow for the bearing to expand and also have room for the bearing to maintain a lubrication layer. Too tight and you run the risk of a "dry roller" due to lack of clearance.

Hey what is this and is it possible to still get one?

Also what is the size of the castle nut? Mine didn't was met with a torch.
