I believe bitcoin, cryptos, NFTs, and most things of the ilk are total scams/ponzi schemes. However in the interest of fairness, BTC was just under $1000 when this thread was started.

I have a brother-in-law who mines bitcoin. He has about 500 servers running 24/7/365. He belongs to a mining cooperative world-wide. They have maybe 10,000 servers running. When one of them mines a bitcoin, it get split amoung all the members. This all happens automatically. He just does it for fun and he doesn't have to pay for the electricity to run the AC and power his servers. I think he told me he makes between $3,000 and $5,000 a month. When a bitcoin is mined, no matter where in the world that happens, that makes the next bitcoin even harder to mine. The more bitcoins mined, the harder it gets. That keeps the number of bitcoins in circulation low and helps drive up the prices. The days of mining on a home personal computer are long gone.

The only thing I know about bitcoin, is that as shady as they are, they're at least a better rabbit hole to stick your money down than NFTs.

In the short time that NFTs have been a thing, they've gone from (1) such a novelty that a kid sold a picture of his drawings for thousands of dollars, to (2, and I am NOT kidding about this) podcast ads touting their shows as "hosted by NFT A.I.s!" as if listening to them will give you street cred.

I don't know a whole lot about it, but our son does. He went to Cal Tech, and was interned then hired by MS before he graduated. He worked in the security section for 11 years , (malware , spyware, ransomware phishing), before moving on to more challenging secret squirrel stuff at other companies. He claims there are at least 6 different countries that have the ability to blow the whole thing out of the water, instantly and without recovery. So pay your money and take your chances, not me.
