I just installed some tie down plates on my daughters MGB (they fit under the leaf spring where it bolts to the axle), which got me wondering if anyone has developed a set for a Corvair? I checked the catalogs from the normal vendors, but I don't see anything. Just wondering how everyone who trailers their 'Vair frequently straps them down. It's kind of a hassle to fit the straps around every time, especially since mine is lowered. I thought about finding a couple places on the frame where there are existing bolts, and having some plates cut to fit, and just using longer bolts.

Any thoughts?

I strap the front around the steering linkage and the back around the brake hoses. smoking smiley


LMs have a slotted hole in the bottom of the front frame rail under the front floor pans that GM used to strap the down for shipment. Do EMs have the same thing?

Not that I know of. I was eyeing the bumper attach point thinking there would be enough structure to bolt a plate behind the bumper that I can just hook to. The biggest issue is that my car sits just low enough that it's hard to get to the suspension, and the chain/strap is against the front valence. At the rear I can get to the lower control arms, although I'm not sure that's the best contact point. I might just weld something up that I can bolt in somewhere. Just wondering if there was something existing, or what others have been doing.

Since your car is a '63 coupe, what I did for my '64 coupe should have some relevance:

On the rear I welded a D-ring to each semi-trailing arm (see photo). I would then simply click a ratchet strap onto each D-ring.

On the front, I simply looped a conventional axle strap around each lower control arm.

Some years back I saw someone selling some brackets he's come up with at a convention, guess they didn't catch on. I have slipped the strap through my wheels but concerned it will scratch the chrome, been thinking about getting some web baskets to slip over the tires that you then attach the straps to.

It is best to tie down to the suspension or tires. That way the car can bounce up and down when you hit the numerous pot hole in our crappy roads!

I have after market wheels and run my straps thru the wheels. In the front, I go straight up and in the back I criss cross the tie downs. Several years ago someone tee boned me in an intersection while traveling thru Georgia towing my Lotus. The impact broke my truck's right rear wheel but the car stayed put on the trailer.

This may be apples and oranges, but I have 80,000 + miles towing a car on a dolly behind our motor home. Mine, as do most Dollies do not have any springs. You just strap the tires down and let the car suspension do the work. Safety chains are there but don't affect tie down.

If you cross the tie downs and one comes loose or breaks while towing it only take a few miles before the vehicle gets pulled into the side of the trailer walls or fender. I alway strap straight front and rear and never had a single issue with the vehicle moving sideways. Crossing the straps can also lowers their exected strength because the load on them is not purely fore and aft.

Someone PM'd me to request pictures of where I attach my tie-downs but since you can't send pics via PM I'll post them here.

This is a parts car so sorry for the crud. Keep in mind I pretty much only tow LM 65-69's. I know the OP was asking about EM's. If the floor support slot is rusted away or weak then I wrap a strap fully around the lower control arm, inboard of the spring. My straps have positionalble anti-abrasion sleeves so the straps themselves are not damaged by sharp edges.

One thing to remember is that don't skimp on the rear tie downs. If you have to stop quickly you don't want your car coming through your tow vehicle. That means the trailer attachment points and the car attachment points. I tow about 5,000 miles a year, I do not cross the rear straps, The car stays in place. On your Corvair I would weld on D rings as shown in the above post on the front and rear suspension.

Hey that's a good idea. I have been pondering how to get my car into my trailer backwards and secure it. I have a winch on the trailer and I could probably figure out a strap setup to pull from those points. Looks like I'll be doing that!

Newer cars have slots in the frame to accept the various types of tie down hooks. I don't know if any will work on Corvairs, early or lates.. Here's some stuff from ebay. I have a long (12") hook and chain in my plow teeruk, it would be nice if the hook was covered in nylon to avoid scratching a show car nice paint tho...

I picked up some heavy-duty "D" rings from the farm supply store yesterday; I'll scratch up the fresh paint on my lower control arms and weld 'em on. Sweet idea Bob! I'm still eyeing up the front bumper mount location to figure out a way to get plates in there for the front. Not sure if it's strong enough on its own, or if reinforcement is needed.

I simply go from one tie down, over the lower front suspension member and back to the other tie down on that end of the car. For the rear I use straps over each tire and then back to the appropriate tie down. Have not had any issues to date.

I do check every 50 miles for the first little bit to make sure something has not slipped causing the straps to loosen up.

OK, For those that want to cross straps that is not the way to go. It doesn't keep the car in place and you loose half the capacity of the strap and tie down that you are hooked to. As has been said you can stop way harder than you can accelerate.

I have never crossed any tie down strap and none of my cars have ever moved enough to hit anything inside the trailer. I won't say that I didn't have any move because I have been over some rough roads! I have also tied down my motorcycle and I don't put it on the side stand.

On the front of the Corvair, I think a 1/4" steel plate bolted between the bumper and the body would work. A hole for a hook or ring welded on to it. Paint to match the body color. That would be a lot easier than crawling under the car. While were on towing, using the proper straps that are made for towing not holding a load down is important. Towing straps have a safety latch that keeps the hook on the d ring on the trailer and what ever you fasten it on to the car. Also , proper tightening is also important. The strap at the ratchet should have at least 3-4 wraps so it don't slip loose and the ratchet handle must be down in the locked position. I have seen the load hooks come off from vehicle bounce. Not good to see your car on the road behind you. I have a friend that had that happen, looking in the mirror he said , hey there's a car just like mine coming up behind us. Not a good situation. All cars have those same slots. The late model has them in the rear as well. They are hidden in the V shaped area near the rear trailing are pivot. Those are industry standard for hold down. My Corvette also has them. They are the factory approved jacking points on the Corvette (the only ones). There are special snap-in pads for cars that get jacked up a lot. I just left them in on the Corvette. I like Bob's d-rings for the rear early spring supports. Welding a similar ring in the middle of the front cross-member would work for the front. While driving, it would also act as a sacrificial rub strip!

I buy these from Northern Tool for about $8 each and hook them to 2" ratchet straps or chains. These click right into all 4 corners of a LM (not sure about the earlys) are easy to reach under and click them in, and they stay secure. This is how the factory tied them down for transportation.
