66 Corsa Turbo Convertible Survival
Posted by: 1STLM ()

Is there any registry or information out there that would give a good Tndication of how many 66 Corsa Turbo Convertibles are surviving? The CORSA vehicle registration seems to be down and not available but there seemed to be quite few listed there earlier. It also seems like quite a few forum members are owners also. Just curious....

I speculate that any estimates in the number of any year or type of Corvair remaining is... well... speculation. :-)

David Trull keeps the registry for the 66 turbo convertibles. He posts on here as Bigwave.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for keeping up the registry. Would you please send me a copy of the latest version? I'm sure my original version is missing quite a few!
Thanks,
Eric

Sure Eric
send me an email to

corsa@cox.net

And I'll attach a copy to the reply. I'm sure they are more unregistered 66 Turbo verts out there, but I have not added a car to the registry in two years. Maybe Brice will be a new onewinking smiley

Brice, If you would like to add your car to the registry, just email me at corsa@cox.net

Is the turbo vert that Tom Hughes (MD) sent to the Ranch on the registry? If not, I'm sure Jeff or Tom would be glad to get you as much info as possible.

Do we know how many were built? I know there are numbers for Corsa verts but is there a breakdown between 140 and 180s?

That is incorrect. There were a total of 1,951 turbos of both coupe and convertible built in 1966 at all 3 plants building turbo Corsas. David Trull has a break down which is just an estimate . We do know how many turbo engines were produced based on the number of engine cases that were stamped with the RL code at Tonawanda.
The numbers are an estimate but the numbers based on convertible body style I seem to recall were under 600 convertibles had the turbocharged engine in 1966 with the rarest ones being built in LA and in Canada.

I guess I was confusing total turbos with turbo convertibles.
I appreciate the knowledge!

Rick, I do seem to recall that the 1,951 number was all turbos including the Canadian cars. If not, that would mean there were 2,188 turbos which I don't think is correct.

The 1,951 is the total for USA built (WRN and LOS) Corsa turbos and 237 for Canadian (Oshawa), the total production for US and Canada combined was 2,188...

I just looked at the registry info and see that now.
The 1,951 number was the total that has been around since the 70's in numerous Corvair books.
I has been common knowledge that the only reason we know any of the turbo production amounts were because of the manifests that Dave Newell was able to retrieve from the Tonawanda plant. Just like a lot of other info (or lack of) from that time it was always explained that it was unavailble due to the records being lost in a fire.
I am just curious as I was always under the assumption that the numbers were based on how many of a given engine had a particular stamping. This was how the 153 numnber came to be for the air conditioned 66 Corsas. Since Canadian cars had their engines made at the same plant and used the same RL stamping, I wonder why the additional 237 car did not show up in that. Obviously they were able to just break out the US built cars for some reason. Why were the other 237 RL coded engines left out?

The issue is that there isn't a document that says X amount of this or that was made...

There is however, "options/orders/production percentage information, so the numbers are "estimates" based on taking total number of produced cars, and doing the math based on reported percentages.

There were most likely more engine built of each type than there were actual cars built, based on some engines failing before leaving the plant or other issues.

All of these number are "accepted estimates"...and not necessary 100% exact....
