Rampside wheel backspacing
Posted by: jack bacon ()
Date: September 20, 2016 10:53AM

I have to buy new wheels and tires for the Rampside. Is the backspacing the same as the other Corvairs which I think is 4.5" ? And the bolt pattern was 5 X 4.5"?

Thanks,

Jack

Be careful on an FC. Lots of other GM 14" wheels will rub.

If it helps you, I put 17X7 wheels with the 5X4.75 and 4.0" BS on my 64 Greenbrier and it is perfect. Ride quality is improved.

Using 17" wheels and 205-45ZR 17 tires I could see that it could handle 17X8" wheels if they had a 5" backspace and the possibly use a 1/4" wheel spacer. You would need to change the stock lug studs to the 1.75" long studs for most aluminum wheels to engage enough threads for safety.

Should I stick with a 7" wheel if I go with a 14" tire?

These Cragar Nomads would fill the bill and are inexpensive at $67 each from Summit

Jack... go with 15" at least...tire selection is minimal with 14's now..

Matt is right. 14" suck for options.

I put 15" S-10 wheels on mine. Fit was nearly perfect. Had to clearance the center hole slightly on the front, as I recall.

1961 rampside with a 65 / 67 110 engine, car four speed.
Now I have 1965 convertible as well, got it running in June, autocrossed in July 2016 at the convention!

There are a couple of styles of S-10 wheels that will work on a Rampy.

A 15" with a 4" backspace may hit the tie rod end. I've just swapped out 15 x 7 Cragars with a 3 3/4" for 15 x 7 American Racing with a 4" but used 10mm spacers all round and longer studs. Pretty sure without it would've hit. Look great though smileys with beer

I used Chevy rally wheels on my FC. Cheap, easy to find and available in lots of different sizes and backspacing. I think they look pretty good, too!
