Wheeler dealers... Hmmmm?
Posted by: Coupedevair ()

I am watching the 1963 corvair episode and I have already found a blooper. They started with a 110 looks like added new push rod tube vitons and a oil pan gasket. But??? What the heck the engine installed had 140 heads and a aluminum oil pan. What happened to the other engine?

I think it was a 110 that had the secondaries blocked off.

It must have been the only 110 with secondarys. GM only produced the 140 with 4 carbs.

I remember seeing the blanked off forward carb ports early in the show. and the Primaries situated further aft than in the center of the head. I was really looking for the turbo that the Spyder should have had. But it is a replacement engine 140 style.

This car is a resto-mod, not OEM original.

I watched it on DVR (more than once) and Mike mentions toward beginning that he checked the code on the engine and it's actually a 140.

P.S. Great episode of easily one of my favorite car shows. No added fake drama and b.s. deadlines.

Ill rewatch but I know for sure that they reinstalled the steel oil pan but when the engine was installed the oil pan was a finned one.I have a 110 and there is no secondarys I think they bought a rebuilt engine and all and ditched the 110.The thing is they tried to pass it off as the same powerplant.I like the show but it seemed as if they rushed it too. This one lacked the detail I am used to on the show.

Hmm, quite possible. I'm not really an expert (limited Corvair experience, but learning more everyday). I'm sure lots of editing and unseen stuff happens on shows like that.

The secondaries were blocked off when they got the car. I noticed the oil pan swap too. I'd imagine Edd did the stock pan and Mike showed up with a new Clark's pan after his visit to their place.

140 with blocked secondaries; probably removed to make room for the AC compressor that used to be there. During the show, Edd mentioned they rounded up and installed the missing secondaries.

Now if we could see the unedited tape for the 48 hours that Edd worked, then we might have more answers. But what the heck, it is entertainment.

I really enjoy the "outakes" they're now including at the end. In one clip from the end of the Corvair episode, Edd was struggling with the deck lid release and Mike says "You're having trouble with that and you expect to rebuild this [blank]ing thing?" That was priceless!

Mike said the engine number revealed it was a 140 bhp engine.

My favorite part is at the end when they add up the cost to determine the profit;

Cost of the car purchase + cost of parts + cost of any needed vendor work ???

Does Ed China work for free ? If so, I would like to hire him because he's one very good mechanic. He should be thrilled with $3/hr, much more than he's getting now.

My favorite show was the very first one whereby Mike buys a VW and calls Ed to tell him it's a real "shit box". When Ed sees it, I thought he was going to quit the show on the first episode. Mike makes fun of Ed's reaction which was hilarious.

I have always guessed Edd's labor is "free" since he and Mike split the profits. From the viewers perspective it is like you bought the car and needed parts, did the work yourself then sold (flipped) the car for the profit.

I have always looked at Wheeler Dealers as being just like an HGTV show except with cars rather than houses. Given the popularity of all the HGTV shows like that I'm surprised Velocity has not produced more shows like that instead of focusing on shows about a bunch of dysfunctional losers making drama between each other in a shop.

I think the Dailymotion link I posted in the other thread was better. This one is sped up, they sound like British chipmunks.

Hey guys newbie to Corvairs here. Ive been looking for a convertible project to work on with my grand kids and nephews for awhile. I was looking for a 62 or older American sedan of some sort. Had a bunch of leads, honing in on a couple, and then I watched this episode of Wheeler Dealers. Hmmm, Corvairs are actually pretty cool.

I started googling the heck out of them. Then I hit Craigslist. Found a 65 Monza convertible project real close to me. Checked it out today, no rust, minor dents and dings. Never wrecked. Problem with the engine, comes with a spare. Oh and auto trans ... that part was a must. Got it for what I think is a decent price.

For now its going to sit for awhile. Need to do some car and truck shuffling. But the plan is to strip it to nothing and start fresh.

So thanks to me catching the Corvair episode of Wheeler Dealers you have a new Corvair owner.
