I agree with the Stig. My image of Craig does not include non-functioning parts on any of his Corvairs. Swap out for an electric oil pressure gauge and a voltmeter . . . no worse than speaker wires thru the door jamb.

The door gauges were one of the first things I noticed about Craig's convertible. They should stay, they are part of the history and character of the Sprint.

Thanks for keeping us posted and keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for the comments! Yes, the gauges will stay one way or another. I'm pretty sure I'll put it back to a date-coded 140 as it had when I bought it. It shouldn't be too hard to find someone interested in the 180.

Any progress update on your Fitch, or are you still working on the Mustang?

Ok, I guess it is time for a little update.

No huge progress, mostly collecting parts. I have installed a new gas tank and hoses and I've rebuilt the rear wheel bearings and U-joints in an attempt to cure the clunk-clunk-clunk noise it has when driven. Those efforts didn't change the noise so it's in the differential. (no problem there, I have several spare '66 differentials).

When the car arrived it had quite the oil leak; all from the recently replaced oil pan gasket. The guy who did that muffed the job. During his assembly the siliconed gasket blooped in so there was a 4-5" section with no gasket! It's all good now. The car has a bad flywheel so I'll change that when I replace the differential.

The car's metallic brake shoes are quite thin. I wonder if they're the same ones I installed back in the '70's? I'm not sure if I can still get replacement metallics or if I even want to. For now, I'll just run 'em.

Other than that, I've just been collecting parts for the resto.

Here's what I've come up with so far:
NOS wheel opening moldings
Perfect rear air grille
NOS rear air grille trim (I already had this)
NOS rear cove trim (except bottom) (I already had this)
Ebay 8-track player identical to the one I had. (Still have the box and tapes from the day)
NORS Roberk sport mirrors identical to what's on the car
New Clarks sunvisors and good used pivots
Good used interior knobs and handles (current ones are heavily pitted)
Power top switch and bezel
Hands wheels & spinners

I have lines on a couple of power top frame assemblies to replace the rusty one and I have a parts car with good floors to replace the rear floor and seat riser. Cody is on tap to take car of that replacement for me.

My hobby time has been devoted to remotoring the houseboat (chevy 350 vs chevy 4.3) and details on the '60 Monza. The '65 Mustang fastback project isn't getting any time at all.

The next project on the Sprint is fuse box replacement. It will be the first installation of the replacement panel I've designed for Corvairs. The first circuit cards are due to be delivered today.smiling bouncing smiley

Well, I guess it's time to post a progress report on my baby...

I've removed all trim and the top in preparation for Cody, who will replace the rear floor and seat riser as well as giving the body the full prep for paint.

While the body, really, is really in good shape, Cody will rework some old body work, take out a few dents, and give it an overall heavy going-over.

As for the disassembly, let's just say I'm getting very familiar with my hammer-impact tool; it's just about the only way to loosen Phillips head screws where they're so rusty you can hardly find the cross and seat belt bolts whose heads are rusted thin. What a pain.

Everything that's come off has been bagged and tagged but most of that will serve only as samples because most of it (bumpers, trim, emblems, and what was left in the interior) will all have to be replaced.

One of the fun-finds was a '63 nickel that was pinched into a floor seam; probably during assembly based on how tight it was and its date.

Here are some post-disassembly shots:

1) It looks much better with the tattered top off

2) The rear floor is Swiss cheese

3) The front floor (like the rest of the car) is solid

I was pleased to find evidence that I wasn't a hack at age 18. grinning smiley

1) Where I ran the power top wire through the rear bulkhead had a nice grommet.

2) The door gauges were made from the front half of a previously enclosed gauge unit. (reference photo) for those who haven't seen this item)

3) On the back of the door panel, I made nice brackets to hold the gauges in place. Seeing this made me smile because about all I had for fabrication tools back then was a hacksaw and a hammer.

Except for the horrible floor, it's really hard to complain about the condition of the body.

1) Front panel is clean and not dented.

2) Windshield corner (both are basically perfect, which is unbelievable)

3) It looks like the left quarter panel is a replacement, based on this exposed black primer, unusual seam at the door pillar, and the thick skim coat it seems to have as evidenced by areas where skim coat has popped off.

Craig replies: Yes indeed! Whatever hit the car there did so with quite a wallop. I can't imagine but your theory is the best I've heard so far. Definitely a side-blow of some kind.

Craig your story is almost identical to Don Homuth's 66. We should plan a reunion gathering somewhere when you both have them done. Would be a great excuse for a road trip and would make a great story too.

I wish you well on this project.

All ready for Cody! Cody suggested Wednesday but then I reminded him that's Valentine's Day so I'm not sure exactly when we'll roll but then he's only 20 minutes away.

I'm getting excited! The car looks SO much better with that raggedy top off and driving it with the top "down" really stirred some old, good feelings from high school.smileys with beer

You're not driving it over?!

What's that brown stuff on the ground? Shouldn't it be snow white around your place?

That's going to be a wonderful car when she's back to being beautiful again.

P.S. You owe me a call...
