Top can be easily repaired. Get some 6 mil contractor's plastic and one roll of black tape. Waterproof and your hair or cranial skin won't stick to the top, unlike what would happen using only duct tape. ggg

Ah - now I see it Craig - thanks. But there is a nuance in your most recent response here that I had also missed earlier: that it is your understanding that these mods were actually done by Fitch (either John or his shop) along with the black paint accents. We know that the bits could be purchased and added by owners, but if your mods came from the Fitch shop, that is extra cool!

Craig:

This has become a saga and one in need of a update. Care to share?

Yes indeed, quite the saga! What are the chances?

At any rate, here's the update:

"The Plan"

Step 1) Correct mechanical issues to make it driveable. The list includes; Fuel tank, filler neck, rubber lines, fuel sender. Rear wheel bearings, Oil leak (Valdez level!), U-joints, and replacement of spliced brake lines.

Step 2) Full strip, rotisserie restoration including rear floor and rear seat riser replacement.

Under-car inspection reveals no other body issues except that the rear filler on the right rocker is rusted away. The rockers are both excellent. Why this piece rusted and nothing else is a bit of a mystery. All I can imagine is that the right rear tire threw some kind of nasty onto it and caused it to corrode.

I've already done the tank, filler neck, fuel and brake line jobs and of course I dragged it down to the DMV for titling. The old tank had so much dirt inside it was actually heavy.

The funny story from the DMV: Their package included a little orange note saying they might charge me more on sales tax if their research indicates a higher value than the reported purchase price. Ha! I should get a rebate! I said to the lady: "This isn't a Camaro, it's a Corvair" and she acknowledged that with a knowing smile.

Pictures:
1) Old and new fuel tanks

2) Compression fittings on brake lines (seller told me about them)

3) Door-mounted gauges I installed when I was 16. When I saw these in one of the seller's videos, this is how I knew this was my car without a shadow of a doubt.

Edit: Picture #2 shows the messed up filler neck. Evidently a locking cap was pried off and the neck was damaged in the process.

That "radical" gauge set installation has got to stay!

Distraction? Why NO, officer - no different than checking your watch, sir...

Craig replies: They're the only ones I've seen too. I plan to leave them right where they are. I'll see that they're illuminated but I probably won't hook them up. Not too keen on 10 gauge wires and a live oil pipe in the door jamb.

Wonder if the damaged filler neck is related to the non matching fuel filler door?

Id keep the door gauges but replace them with new ones that are either wireless or only need sense wires that could be run through a correct door accordion boot or contacts.

I was surprised to receive a call from the reporter!

I asked her "How did you find out?" and she replied "Ha Ha, We have spies everywhere!!".

I turns out that my friend who edited my cell phone video clips into a DVD tipped them off. He's a frequent contributor to the paper so they know him well. Thanks buddy!
