Don:

I will never be a sheet metal, body man or painter. Just lucky enough to do what I can with rattle cans. Yea haw. They are fun. I have friend who is a painter and said he would paint anything I need, if I got the body work done. BUT My money has to go to the Monza and Camaro to get them where I want them.

He will also be painting my Model T, I just picked up. No, it is not full scale Henry Ford Model T. It is a Model T go-gart I am refurbishing to able to do more parades. My legs and back won't allow the long fast walks during our parades. This will me to keep up with the Alexa Shrine Hillbilly unit and meet and greet the public.

I recommend getting a refund for the engine compartment paint. It's not fair that you paid $20 per can for a tone that's not even close to Fawn. Whether or not you choose to believe it.

Genuinely being helpful.

Happy New Year,Al.

Tp, you are basing your observations on a photo taken with flash. It definitely looks washed out in the photo. Real life, it is a different color presentation. Cheap phone camera also.

I located the photo of Steve's Firebrier's engine tins, which he was gracious enough to assemble and photograph for me. His lower shroud's show the heat shields (diverters) are on the exhaust log side of the shroud.

Anyone have an extra left side thermostat heat shield to trade for this extra right side I have?

I guess I could slowly reverse bend this extra right side with some heat and drill holes in the correct location for the left shroud.

Right, Al, That's what the picture in the shop manual shows. Yes, the full open adjustment is what is in the manual, and works fine.

I would try re-drilling holes in your incorrect shield to see if it will work on the left side. At least hold it in position and see.

You got rid of all the extra tin you had? Lower shrouds with rust holes sometimes hold parts that are needed later.... winking smiley I've been to the scrap pile for parts many times!

Frank:

I have lots of LM lower shrouds. I don't remember what that old 102 had for shrouds but I think they were LM shrouds. I will look at them when I get back from vacation in a couple weeks to see if the shields are the same. Thanks for the help. Hope you had a fun evening.

I know I can move it to the same relative position and rivet it in place so it can be used as is. It would be nice if the LM shroud had the same shield. I have a few beat up shrouds that can be sacrificed for the part.

Thank you, Frank, for all the help. I thought the shields were different from EMs to LMs. I was able to grab a few minutes this morning to get into my storage shed and look at the bin with the tins I saved. I saved this very humble rusted out left lower shroud for some unknown reason. It has a good shield I can use. When I get back in a couple weeks, work will commence on getting lower shrouds and cooling boxes assembled/installed.

Here is the reason the rod is being replaced. It could be used, but I am not particular fond of something that only has 50% of its threads holding it on. I had clips from the LM rods where this damaged rod could have been used and nobody been the wiser except me. Until the thermostat failed and the next owner found my sloppy work. Not the way I work at all. The previous owners did though (west coast van originally, must have been using lots of strange smoking materials).

Started looking at installing windshield washer nozzle on the Greenbrier. I have a choice of 3 nozzles.

1. OEM nozzle with some pitting
2. Plastic nozzle from China, which is a direct replacement.
3. GM nozzle with 3 spray ports, but requires a larger hole for it to be snapped into.

If I was keeping it, #3 would be installed. But being it is being sold, #2 it is. #1 is not spraying as well as I would like. It will be bathed in vinegar to clean it up internally to see if can be improved.

Testing prior to install is a good thing.

Well, Tried assembling the left cooling door, box, lower shroud, thermostat and rod. Determined I had cleaned and painted 2 RH doors. This item on hold until I clean and paint a LH door. Jeff at California Corvairs sent me a long rod for the LH setup and also the proper throttle return spring.

We did get the seals installed on the front shroud and the right shroud. They will get some touch up painting before installation.

Actually they were quite easy. A little to awkward at sometimes to handle, but still manageable. We got a system set up and went at it.

I got all the tools set up that we would need. I cut out all the new staples out of 0.051 stainless safetywire. Donna and I used 5 4" large mouth clamps and popsicle sticks to get the 3 pieces aligned and secured. Donna drilled all the 0.051" holes using existing holes and inserted all the staples. She and I worked the staples closed. She held the shroud stable and I pounded them closed on the vise in which I mounted a 1/4" piece of steel to lay the head of the staple on. The key to inserting the staple was to make one leg longer than the other to allow turning and slipping of the staple.

And YES. WE had teamwork.

OH yeah. Not one drop of blood shed in the garage during the process. Garage has been maintained at a balmy 68 degrees this past 10 days.

Last Sunday, I gave Rick the Carbs, Carb Rebuild kits and the Throttle Shaft Bush kits to work on for me. Hope to have them back late this week.

Today I got things ready to make new steel lines for the engine. No rubber lines in the engine compartment for this van while I have I it. If you go back to the start of the discussion, this engine had at least 6 feet of rubber lines ion the compartment.

New lines and sample lines placed in ready status for working the task. Wire wheeled the samples so I wasn't working with rusty lines.

ps: Rick has other lines we may use as samples, instead of these that I have.

Modifying new engine harness to use the internally regulated alternator that was on the van when I got it.

Here is a photo of the harness as removed.

My wiring diagram is attached. I will list all materials used, when I complete the modification.

A question to the Avionics trained members.

I am ready to solder in the diode on the blue wire.

Do I have it position tight for current flow? Dark band is on right side.

I am inserting it between the blue wire and the black junction box which the brown VR wire will also connect. See schematic in previous post.
