Re: Setting Up 64 Greenbrier Deluxe For Road Use

Question: Can a 64 Greenbriers originally with manual, now with a PG have neutral safety switch mounted to the PG selector lever. Anyone have a photo of the switch mounted? It appears I have a car instrument panel. Large hole where shifter rod moves up & down also.

I can figure out how to relocate the purple wire to one side of the switch from the ignition switch. And add a wire from it back to the ignition switch. I have a switch I got as part of the parts hoard when I bought the van.

I didn't think the manual transmission vehicles back in 64 had a neutral safety switch.

Here is the wiring diagram showing it is for RPO M35, which is the PG transmission option. It does not show a switch for manual transmission 95s.

And the other photo shows what switch looks like. I don't see a way to mount that to my instrument panel. I must be missing a dash bracket to make it work.

My wiring is not changed/chopped under the dash. Where would the manual transmission neutral safety switch be located on the van. If like the LM cars, it is under the vehicle.

Not the manual...it's the normal shifter/switch combo the back side of the dash

That is why I need a photo of a switch mounted on the PG Lever bracket. So I can see what part(s) I may be missing to mount it up.

I got instrument panel out to check gas gauge and add neutral safety switch. Found there is a neutral safety switch already mounted but not wired to purple wire on ignition switch.

Checked switch and found neutral safety contacts work. Back up lights contacts do not. No biggie. Removed purple wire from ignition switch connector. Made 2 purple wire jumpers to connect safety switch to harness purple wire and to ignition switch connector.

Checked out gas gauge and it is working fine with sender that came with truck. This old sender sweeps 0 - 35.8 ohms. I have about 1/2 tank of fuel and new sender reads in tank 18.4 oms at dash gage connector. No issue now. When we first powered up with no fuel in the tank, gauge read slightly over 1/2. Had to confirm everything was good.

Next is to check all bulbs for instrument panel and find a way to illuminate shift legend.

Thanks, Mel. Looking for bulbs now. I have a mismatch of bulbs in 2 EM panels. I might go and strip bulbs out of the 64 vert.

I taped off the panel and repainted the bezel. It was looking old and ragged. Bezel is now a Silver caliper color by Dupli-color. Only silver I had other than aluminum and barbeque silver.

Tires are waiting at Goodyear for me to bring Greenbrier in. Looks like Saturday Morning van will be there, if I get instrument panel back in.

Stripped bulbs from the Monza Vert. That gave me the needed #53 bulbs. Still didn't have the 1816 bulbs. Finally found them from my old Camaro dash.

Went to start panel installation and finally noticed the extra panel I got with the Monza Vert was a chrome plated panel. It also had the vertical ribbed lower trim piece under the speedometer. That piece match the glove box door vertical ribs. We cleaned up and painted the mount panel and cover and polished up the bright pieces. Still more polishing to do, but the instrument panel will now more closely match the glove box door I got for this Deluxe Van.

So assembly of the panel will be done tomorrow, along with the installation.

We have been working on th instrument panel. Still have an issue with fuel gage. Reads full when ignition is turned off. Goes to 1/2 tank no matter how much fuel is in the tank. Can't blame the new sender and body harness wire. Last check of sender from plugs at gage showed 18 ohms with about 6 gallons in it. Is there any history of new senders binding up on tanks when installed?

Took van to Goodyear to get 27 year old tires replaced. Learned I have looseness in tie rods, idler arm and Pitman arm bolt connection to link.

Learned that gas I put in was not enough to do 60 miles. Ran out about 3 miles from the house. Donna was behind me in Silverado, so she went and got 5 gallons of gas to get the Van home. Last run until I get gage working right.

Did you do the wire unhooked/ wire grounded test?
I'm too lazy to read back through the thread.
Empty grounded, full unhooked.
If it passes that test it is the sender.
If not, it is the gauge or wiring.
"Is there any history of new senders binding up on tanks when installed?"
Yes, I've heard of floats being installed backwards on senders. The arm could also be bent.

Had gauge on bench and yes it followed requirements. Power to right terminal - full reading. Add ground to left terminal and slowly goes to empty. I am pulling panel again for more work. It was temporarily installed to drive to go get the tires.

I did note one coil on the gauge read 9 ohms, I believe, and the other read 75 ohms. Seemed unusual. If I have to, I will drain tank by pumping out the gas and pulling tank to check sender. But seeing only 18 ohms on the wiring and sender shows that would be about 1/2 tank. First I will put the second sender on the gage wire at tank and see how gage responds.

Found and ordered outer tie rods ES350R (I have a set of ES370L inner tie rods). Found and ordered ES312S adjusting sleeves. Found and ordered tie rods that make up rod from Pitman Arm to boomerang. I will reuse sleeve, if I can't locate its number or one at a FLAPS.

Idler arm may be problem. Added my quest for one to previous discussion on FC idler arms and the issue with arms that Clark's were selling in 2011.

Spent yesterday morning troubleshooting the gas gauge 1/2 reading when empty issue. Pulled panel and rechecked gage. Power to gage power terminal with it grounded, Gage goes full. Grounded sender terminal and gage slews to empty. Rechecked ohms on van brown wire and it is 18.5. Disconnected body harness from dash harness and rechecked brown wire. Still 18.5. Ran a ground wire to the sender ground wire and rechecked ohms. Still 18.5. Pulled gas gage from 64 Monza Vert and hooked it in. Same 1/2 full reading.

Drained tank and rechecked wiring and sender. Now 13.5 ohms. Disconnect sender ground and ohm meter had infinity ready. So now I know it is a sender issue. This is a new sender, so tank will be pulled to see if sender will read 0 ohms when out of tank. Jacked van up and set it on jack stands.

Today I will get tank out for more checks.

Spent a little time modifying the chrome EM car instrument panel to be able to be mounted to the Van. Cap panel bezel doesn't have the 2 lower mount holes. I was able to drill a hole on the left side and recess it where it will not be seen when installed. Still have to trim a little metal off the backside of bezel to all van clip to match up with bezel. The Monza Vert will lose its glove box door chrome surround to the Greenbrier. This will give the Greenbrier Deluxe a more deluxe interior trim level.

That was an awful lot of work with the gauge. Next time just pull the wire off at the sender and ground it. That would have shown you where the problem was in seconds. No meter required.

Here is the problem. You CAN'T get to the gas tank sender connections when the tank is installed. They are on top of the tank up close near the floorboard. There is a structure plate in front of the sender, which keeps your hand from even getting close to the sender. And about 1 3/4 clearance in areas you slide your fingers in.

When we put the new body harness in, we could not connect the new connector to the tank. So we cut the old brown wire, made a service loop and connected it with a pin to the new harness wire. Thought we wouldn't be pulling tank. When we pulled tank for brake lines replacement, we connected up new brown wire properly to tank. We have been here 3 times now and still can't figure out a way to the top of the tank to access the sender.

You have to eliminate everything before commiting to dropping the tank to access the sender.

Some have went ahead and cut the hole in the panel above the sender.
