66 Corsa Turbo Engine Reawakening Project
Posted by: Lane66m ()
Date: June 30, 2016 03:43AM

Here are the photos of the Turbo engine as I got it in Florida. It is not complete, but I have a lot of parts in the car for the engine. The parts supplied did include 2 turbos.

Engine code T1018RL Both heads are 3878568.

Things I noted:

Thermister not installed.
Pressure plate and clutch discs laid into bell housing.
All spark plugs removed and I noted 4 were loose. All had copious amounts of silver anti-seize compound on the threads. One had the compound on the electrode.

Main item accomplished, we work with the engine and was able to finally rotate the engine. We squirted Marvel Mystery oil into the cylinders before we started trying to loosen it up. I have rotated it at least 10 times and all sounds good.

Next step is to clean the engine. Deflash of the heads will be done along with a reseal of the engine. I will use the How to stop Leaks on the Corvair booklet as a guide.

And the side views.

Oh yes, when rotating the engine we had a small amount of rusty water come out of the #6 exhaust tube. I feel that one was the offending cylinder causing the lock. Once I get it ready, I will get a crank cycle done (on the floor) and record cylinder pressures. Understandably they will be high due to MM oil in cylinders, but I will rotate it quite a bit before I check pressures. I have several starters that can be used.

I would pull that head and inspect the cylinder on that side if there is rust in it I would clean it out rather than trying to keep turning it. All you will do is compact that rust into the rings and stick them or worse yet, score the cylinder.

Thanks, Lee. We will pull both heads. If I pull one, might as well pull both. It is time to get it up on an engine stand.

I second that. I got one from Amazon for around 25 bucks. I used it to make sure there were no mouse nests in my engine after it sat in my uncle's barn for a year.

Because it is setting there bare naked you can have your way with it. You say you will be pulling the heads for inspection. If you are on an engine stand you should probably go ahead and break it down all the way and inspect everything. Cracks in pistons, excessive wear or scoring in bearings, hone out cylinders and replace rings, inspect valves and seats. If they are turbo heads they will have bronze guides, clearance should be checked. New valve seals, etc. etc., how many cubic dollars do you have and how many unknowns are you willing to gamble with?

Max:

Many cubic dollars invested in my Monza engine that I need to get together. Monza engine case is on my engine stand awaiting me to get to work. That will keep me from doing a rebuild at this time on the Turbo engine.

This Corsa engine just needs to run good. Mount it on the engine test stand I got, borescope it to know what is inside, pull left head due to rusty water that came from #6 exhaust port when it finally rotated and reassemble it back together with all the loose parts I got with the vehicle and engine.

Hopefully it will run for a couple years, so I can get my Monza finished up. Then Corsa goes in for a complete disassembly to fix rust issues and repaint to OEM color. We'll know more after the borescope inspection and head pull. I pull th

I retire on November 2nd. So I will have more time, (less money?) to get things done.

The Greenbrier Deluxe that is another project to become a registered driver only. More on that one later today.

If the turbo engine still has factory bronze exhaust guides, the will be well past shot. Its easy to see, just pull one exhaust spring. The stem will probably rattle in the guide. Mine were shot in 20k mile range. For whatever reason the factory turbo replacement heads were even worse, don't know how that was possible, but they were.

I get the point.

Since this is an unknown engine, it would be best to send the Turbo heads (see photo) I got with the purchase of the Greenbrier out for inspection and rework. I will be borrowing a borescope tomorrow to get the inspection done this week.

Wow, I didn't realize that. Were all years of the Turbo engines this way ?

The original owner of my Corsa gave me about 4 extra pairs of turbo
heads with the car when I bought it. Every time the guides wore out he
would be another pair. It was all because of those guides.
I have seen arguments on here over the years between iron and bronze guides.

Now the question, how was the bronze guides issue fixed? Use replacement bronze guides or a different material guise.

""Now the question, how was the bronze guides issue fixed?""

First was a reamer and over sized valve stems, after that was maxed out they sold replacement turbo heads for less than $100 each. For a long time you could pick up brand new turbo heads at swap meets. Those day are gone.

I use iron guides now, a tight iron guide will disipate more heat than a loose bronze one.

Some guys ream them and install bronze K-liners. Its not easy, I tried. The bronze guides are tough on reamers, also they expand away from the reamer. You need to follow up with a ball hone or it will be too small to drive the liner in place.

If you replace the entire guide as many guys do you will need to replace the seat as the bore in the factory guides were not always concentric to the seat. If you look at many stock guides you will see the bore in the guide is not centered in the guide.

I assembled my engine test stand and mounted an empty engine in it. Had to make a few mods, but it is mounted securely. Next on line is to install the Corsa Turbo engine and do the borescope.
