I'm curious how long they actually last. So I mark the date on each LED bulb with a sharpie in a hidden area.

I am a stickler for keeping things clean and oiled. I have a pressure/steam cleaner and 4 floor drains. The LEDs are light years ahead of the Flourescents. You wkill not realize how noisy those damn things are until you switch. I dont have to crank the stereo as much. The light is almost instantaneous and very bright.last weekend I barely had to get the drop lights out.

YUP! CFL's suck. I've got some old incandescents still kickin' and out lasting CFL's. I don't know why the Govmint allows CFL's anyway knowing they contain mercury (Carcinogen). Led's are next on my list as the incandescents wear out! CFL's are dying left and right! smileys with beer

I'm on about the same page as most others here. I have been converting the lights that are always on and expanding as things burn out or bulbs become available. Security lighting, Kitchen, living room etc. Even the fish tank. Then just today my wife brought home a replacement for the 2 -48 inch work light in the garage. Wow what a difference. Can't believe I didn't swap it sooner.

One thing I discovered with CFL's, to obtain good life is to properly condition them when new. When first powering up, it is essential to leave them on for at least 1 hour but preferably 4 or more hours. After that they can be turned on and off for short cycles and still last a long time.

Power costs $0.23/kWh from my REA so I converted my home to almost all fluorescent 10 years ago. As they burn out, I am now replacing with LED. The big change will be my new shop/storage/garage building. The main lighting consists of 24 8' fluorescent fixtures. Half have bad ballasts. These will get converted to 8' LED tubes. The rest will be converted as they fail.

To those reading this and still not convinced, here is my longevity info.

Master Bathroom = 6 incandescent globe lights above the sink. This light was always cycling on and off. I was replacing one every couple months it seemed. I always kept a 6 pack available. This was from 2007 to 2013. Converted to LED, no replacements in 3 years. Good savings from power reduction, not buying bulbs and saving my time for other tasks.

Outdoor motion light. 7 units were halogens. 6 that constantly cycled due to animals and wind experienced typical bulb failures every few months. I think I changed at least 5 bulbs every 6 months if not sooner. 6 units are converted. The 7th has been selected off. No replacements in the 1 - 3 years they have been up. Good savings from power reduction (wind always had these halogens on), not buying bulbs and saving my time for other tasks. Also safety factor, no more climbing up ladder to change out bulbs. My wife thinks that is the best reason of all, protecting my 63 year old body from falls by not going up ladders.

Kind of a related question---
Anyone know if local common big box stores (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) will take metal halide bulbs?
I know they take CFLs. I don't want to pay to recycle them, but will willingly make the effort to recycle old bulbs if possible.

After eight years, the metal halides in my barn are wearing out (I got them for free, used).
I've gone to the lamprecycle.org website, but didn't find it helpful.

Most people aren't aware of the amount of poisonous mercury in these kind of bulbs. Ever try to get rid of 8' fluorescent tubes? Trash men won't take them unless you smash them up first... very hazardous.

Getting rid of my 8 foot cfls is a pain, thus the reason you still see one in the pic. I have a 5.7 foot bed so the ride to the hardware store is like carrying expired nitroglycerin across town.

Actually that is a very good deal. I have been looking for bulbs since this topic srarted. I was avoiding replacement with complete units due to $40 unit replacement. RobertC pm'd me about the bulbs and thier cost. 6000k average cost is $14 from what I found.

Not trying to be negative but no matter what you do to your electrical besides having solar the electrical company is still going to up on your rates unless you completely shut the switch off from them.. Yes your bill will go down some but they have the quote "Power" to go up! When they see that they are not making a profit from you.

They are only 1600LM. I would check to see what the bulbs you have now are. Each of my new shop lights are 4800LM a piece.

I am looking for a set if mimi LED track lights for my kitchen that have replaceable LED bulbs. The reviews for the ones with integrated LEDS is not that good, short bulb life and therefore the entire fixture is done.

The output is lower than I would like plus they are listed as 6000K which is too blue for my tastes. I like a 5000K color temp. range.

They aren't infallible. I've had three failures of the 60W equivalent Cree screw-in bulbs sold at Home Depot. That style has already been replaced by a better Cree design. I have probably 25 of those type in service.

With the long life of the LEDs I believe you'll be seeing less and less field replaceable LED bulb fixtures. It costs more to make them and why build them with replaceable bulbs if they are supposed to last for 20+ years? I know they will fail eventually but do you think you'll be able to buy a replacement LED bulb to fit that old fixture in 10-15 years?

I was looking for 1800 lumens with 4000k to 6000k color. I have ordered a set of these for my garage. If they are good, I will leave them in garage. If not, they'll go to garden center and in the 2 lean-tos I have. I will let you know how they work out.

Matt:

Here are photos of the bench light that has been converted. My recommendation is use 1600 lumens for direct lighting over something. For garage overhead lighting, go for 1800 lumens.

Second photo is with 2 overhead fluorescent (4 bulbs) turned on.

Yes. It is much brighter on top of the bench. Down on the floor is less. I assume due to the flat design of the LED bulb. My bench light is centered over bench from front to rear of the working surface. That is why I aam suggesting 1800 lumens for the ceiling lights. To give more lighting. I will be trying these bulbs in the 2 fixtures over the front of the Vair. I will supply before and after shots of this area when done.
