1961 coupe
Posted by: edconnolly ()

My 1961 coupe, which was built in Oakland, has an opening in the floorpan beneath the rear windscreen with a stamped cover secured by screws. This is factory original but not familiar to the local club. Is this routine for 1961 or 1960 cars?

It is on my 60! Trying to remember what it was used for, but don't remember. Seems it was used for an adjustment, just not sure what. HTH

First Corvair I had was a 1962 700 Coupe. It had a removable panel behind the rear seat. Large panel that went back into the package shelf area. Similar to the removeable rear seat panel in the vans. This was flanged all around all the edges and had bead rolled reinforcments between the screws holding it in. Also heavily covered in seam sealer just like the stuff arounf the kick panel vents. Not some homemade cobbled piece. Never seen another car with this.

My '61 had that same panel as described.
But, while it was screwed down from the top, it could not be removed until the heater blower had been removed from below.

AC1948, I believe you have it.

I had forgotten but I was told quite some time back that it was for adjustment. And from a fella that has been into these cars a lot longer than I.

Jeff, you described it exactly. I removed the cover while I'm refinishing the floor (slight surface rust only). It's a handy feature. Matt, how could I reduce the size of two photos so they could be attached?

I am assuming that those that did NOT have them, they were not powerglides?...or were they?

This could have been another specific body change for powerglide equipped cars only...

wow, that looks a whole heck of a lot different than the back of my 60.
as far as i know my car was originally a PG, though it does have a hole with a plate over it on the floor for a manual shifter. (i believe they all did.)

i was underneath the car today and did see that there is a ~1.5" rubber plug on the rear package area tray right above where the band adjuster is.

as far as i know my car is a california original, though i never did post the body tag for yall to decipher.
if i can dig it up ill post it later.

that inboard mounting molt can be a real pain in the ass.

I think I may have mixed up the last ACC code...

EZ = RPO 398 Tinted Windshield Only,

Could you please confirm that you have tinted windshield.

Is there any pictures of these for a 4 door? I just posted about this, looking for a picture on the access panel for low band adjustment. I was deleted for 62, so a 60/61 only thing.

I live in a place where even the people rust.
