Boats with Wayne 100 Corvair engines question?
Posted by: ral1963 ()
Date: March 08, 2016 10:53AM

The Wayne 100 boats were built using Corvair engine components, does anyone know (or can they check) what was stamped as the engine code?

The base case would have been made at Tonawanda, but I was curious as to what (if any) engine stamping was applied...

I checked my records on the Wayne 100's and discovered this was not covered in any of my documentation...

Bummer!! I've sold mine and that part of the case was covered by the flywheel and I never looked...

The only engine work was to re-ring and fix one dropped seat in 22 years!

My '65 had flat pistons and turbo heads....164 ci

I'll ask Tom Keosababian to look at his,,,,, but may not be original cases! it's a 140 headed engine

I just read the Popular Mechanics article, very neat! It had an omnithruster with power steering!

First factory corvair with power steering?

I think our club Pres still has a Wayne 100. Maybe ask him to check on the details?

South Coast CORSA has the Hot Rod Magazine article scanned and posted online HERE

It mentions that Wayne Horning - the designer/maker was at Inboard Marine CO. Temple City, California.
Author of the article is a bit un-informed on the Corvair engine - calls a 95 a "high-performance" engine and also says it uses a 144 cu.in. 95hp engine...

In the PM article it says they Inboard Marine purchased engines from Chevrolet - probably much like the Ultra Van.

Yes, 96 engines were special ordered with a specific configuration to be used in the Wayne 100 boats.

There were numerous examples of bulk engine purchases for specialty use. Each unique in their own configuration.

The original owner of my boat was Wayne Horning's shop forman Bob Hall. He was involved in the development of the Wayne 100. My case number is TO2254AA. This would seem to indicate a special build. Also I think all the engine cases were painted light blue, which mine is.
Wayne Horning was a brilliant engineer and investor. His Wayne 12-port cylinder head earned him a very devoted following of hot rodders with GMC 6-cylinder engines. He also was a very successful aerospace contractor for many years and made a small fortune investing in the insurance industry. I have always found it interesting that so many talented and successful people were attracted to Corvairs. Right?

I agree... prior to emissions.... these were the wave of the future...post 1973 oil shortage... All just bad timing and the fact Chevy didn't sell a "Mini-Vette" to keep the engineering going, like Mazda did with it's Rotary.

Look how long Porsche kept all air cooled!

Tom,
So was yours a "prototype" hull?
Bob Helt's book "Classic Corvair" shows the AA as a 140HP engine code
Word was that they installed standard 95HP engines for production, though.

Love to have one - I've yet to get my 16'Lee Craft runabout mated with it's Kiekhaefer Merc 700 "Tower of Power" though. This Spring - For sure!

Dan,
You are correct. All production boats were built with 95hp motors. I didn't see the AA code in my "Junkyard Primer", but I will defer to Bob Held's expertise. My boat has the Schuster "Tahiti" hull, which is a copy of a Glastron desgn. It has much less free board and is a sportier design than the more common Avalon hull. Bob Hall built this motor himself starting with the base motor. He installed Salih cylinders but did not use Salih pistons. The pistons (might be made by Badger) measure 3.650" which is .025" larger than the standard 3 5/8" Salih piston. This means he had to bore out the Salih cylinders. The heads are 140 but he went through a lot of trouble to install a pair of Holley-Weber 2bbl carbs. It's not a very good installation because there's not enough room to do that set-up properly. The motor has been very reliable though, and Bob used it for many years down on the Colorado River. It also has a liquid-to-liquid oil cooler and other features. I also have enough Inboard Marine components to build a complete spare engine and a complete spare drive unit. (Note: It's For Sale. PM me if you want more information).

TOMKEO, could you double check your ENGINE and confirm that it is TO2254AA and not actually T0225XAA?

I have a couple examples of 1969 Wayne 100's with the XAA stamp.

I cannot find any examples of earlier model Wayne's...

DAN, I don't have my copy of Bob's book with me (I do own it), but I was pretty sure that it did not list engine codes AA or AB in it...

I am trying to document AA & AB codes as a type replacement engine or special order application engine.

Might end up that AA was for 95hp applications and AB was 110 or 140 configurations?

Hopefully time will tell the tale...

Dan, LOL...9th Edition? I think I have a 1st Edition copy...

Tomkeo, regarding your engine stamping of TO2254AA..I would love to confirm it, as I have found another Wayne thread where another engine code of was reported as being T0II5XAA and a 4 vs X could easily be misread in a stamping.

Does anyone have an image of a Wayne 4AA or XAA code stamp?

I did get an image of non-marine use XAA engine sent to me. It is a 1966 140 engine..

Still looking for an WAyne 100 engine stamp...

The Wayne 100 used the following engines over the years..all ordered through Chevrolet as complete engine, then modified for use in the boats.

1963 80hp..
1964 95hp..
1966-69 95hp..

Rick,
Here is the photo of my case number. This engine started as a 95hp, in 1965 I think.

Tom,

Well the "4" is clearly a "4"... Could the "4" denote a 1964 95hp engine?

There have been some many changes to your engine (with performance upgrades) that it would be hard to determine.

The fan (and fan bearing) could have easily been upgrade over the years, but is you fan style the 64 small hub or 65-69 large hub mag fan?

Is there any "true" differences between a 1964 case and a 1965 case?
