1961 Corvair Abarth Prototype and Abarth exhausts
Posted by: ral1963 ()
Date: January 14, 2016 09:14AM

Since the thread recently came up on VV regarding a venture for an Abarth Corvair performance and handling package being worked on circa 1961, I decided to dig into a little more for my personal records...

I have a nice article in process (that I will share here once complete) as I flesh out some more of the details and research.

One thing I need help with is a clearer image of this Abarth exhaust (as imported by Fisher) ad with the 2 different Corvair exhaust options.

I have the Part numbers and price, but I cannot discern the "performance improvements" details outlined in the small box in the lower left hand corner...

If someone has this AD or a larger (readable) copy of it, I would be interested in the details listed as compared to stock 61 vs with the Abarth exhaust...as I cannot make out the numbers from the copy I have.

0-40 mph...

0-60 mph...
0-70 mph...
0-80 mph...

Interesting how they use the rear engine mount to block bolt to secure it. Pretty neat.

Yes Abarth Corvair would have had some interesting things... engine & suspension tweaks, gage package, and special exhaust, all topped off with a Abarth Scorpion badge...

Here is another version of the Abarth Corvair designed exhaust...

I would love to know which version preceded the other...

There was a EM at the fan belt toss a few years ago (3years ago?) that had an exhaust very similar to the Abarth set-up- I remember the attaching method was exactly like that, I'm not sure if it was a true "Abarth" exhaust, but it sure looked like it- that car sounded so badaxx!! I haven't heard one that sounded like that one before or since. Vance Piper(?) maybe???

Rick: give us a clue to the magazine the ad is in. I don't have time to just start looking through different mags but if all of us knew where to look it would help.

I really wish I knew where to look as well...

I only have the image as JPEG in my files, no idea of the origin of the AD.

I was hoping someone recognized it. It is actually "cropped" as it was a partial page and other section was a Pirelli tire ad that was not Corvair specific.

If anyone has any other Corvair Abarth exhaust ad or information that they recall of would be willing share, it would be greatly appreciated...

The page is reminiscent of magazines like Sports Car Graphic and Sports Car Illustrated. I will try to look through some of mine too.
Fisher Prod was big back then along with MG Mitten and Vilam Hahn. They both carried Abarth parts too.

A product I haven't seen on a corvair, as advertised in 60's car magazines a runyon tube. Not even sure I spelled it correctly but the pictures in this topic reminded me.

John: do you mean the dual exhaust offered by Runyan that had a single oval center outlet in exhaust grill?

I like the design of that Abarth dual exhaust system. The balance tube and rear cross brace should ensure that the mufflers never sag. And the balance tube should help to cure the drone that typically comes with low restriction mufflers and dual exhaust.

I imagine, though, that it might be tough to adjust the valves without taking down the whole system.

It would be great if a vendor could offer something like that today in stainless, but the price would have to be very, very high.
