110 Engine Big 1.72" Valve Mod Project (Bill Thomas Tribute heads)
Posted by: Lane66m ()
Date: January 13, 2016 03:38AM

With all my postings I am doing a big valve 110 Engine build, I figured that a topic for the project is needed. So here goes.

Crankshaft is at machine shop for cleaning, inspection, Magna-Flux inspection and sizing of all journals. I should know next week if polishing is all it needs.

Heads to be packed up today.

What cam are you going to run, Al?
Are you going with roller tip rockers?
I highly recommend Bob Helt's "Classic Corvair" & Seth Emerson's update to Bill Fisher's "How to Hot-Rod Corvair Engines" book. Now titled "Performance Corvair"
Both are loaded with great tips to help your build.

Engine builds are FUN!

Dan:

I am going with a street cam. Probably OTTO-20. Standard rockers as Tom did not state I needed them for a street engine. This will be a street driven peppy 110 with 4 spd and A/C.

I have the shop manuals, Classic Corvairs, Performance Corvairs, Corvair Secrets, and How to Keep Your Corvair Alive. Plus I have Clark's catalog, thr Cirvair Technical Guide and the Vaio Tips seriee.

My engine build history is a Chevy 283, a Plymouth 340 and 2 Saturn SC1 1.9 SOHC engines. Never an air cooled so I will be reading a lot and asking questions

Piston rods have been removed from old pistons and are boxed up. They will be mailed in morning to Clarks. I have a stack of pistons (29) now in my scrap aluminum pile. Pins are in scrap iron bucket.

I'm considering going this direction on my 110, also. I'll be curious to see how your build progresses. Good Luck!

I am going with Tom's new 1.72 intake valves mod, instead of his original big valve mod which used 1.52 valves. Just remember more horsepower cost more greenbacks.

Do you have plans to Dyno the engine after the build?

Matt:

I am thinking of putting the car on the dyno with current engine, then again after 200 miles of running the upgraded engine. I want a couple hundred miles of running with the stock 110, so I can honesty report the performance change. Just need to locate a facility close to me that does this testing. I don't believe it will be a difficult search.

Heads have been packed and labels affixed. Rods have been packed and labels affixed.

Donna will take packages to Post Office this morning. She is also picking up the crankshaft from machine shop.

Block and all loose parts have been pressure washed. No, I didn't apply pressure to any machined surfaces. Parts will now been detailed cleaned.

Is there a thread on "Tom's new 1.72 intake mod"? Be interested in this. Thread on slant tube exhausts? Mulling options for an engine build. Did a real nice HP 140 years ago but wanted to look into something different and compare value/ reliability. I liked the power of the 140 I did but this many years out, I'm concerned about valve seats. I'm thinking that a big valve 110 head modded for MP FI and slant tubes might make similar power more reliably. Neither is cheap, I do know that.....

This is one of his big 1.72 valve head project engines. Mine will be a 110 engine with OT-20 cam, stock-ish compression, NOS piston & cylinders, Bill Thomas Tribute heads with 1.72 intake valves, dual 110 sized exhaust.

Fuel and ignition delivery under consideration at this time but leaning more to EFI.

Tom is currently modifying the heads at this time.

Tom sent me a photo of my 110 heads after valve train removal and cleaning. Tom will start the process soon on converting them to Bill Thomas Tribute heads with 1.72 intake valves.

Today, Donna and I got one half of the block cleaned thoroughly. It still needs bore brushing of all ports and a final hot tub wash in clean water.

We also cleaned all the pushrod tubes we have (84). Now it is inspection and selection time for the best 12. There are numerous ones with minor dents that will be worked out to make the selection pool larger. Now to find the topic on repairing minor dents in these tubes.

Back to work at Gulfstream for the next three days. We will pick up the cleaning on Monday afternoon.

ps: I suspect Donna will go down to the garage and clean on the second half during the weekend.

Clark's informed me all parts I shipped to them have been received. They are now working my order. I have to get this block cleaned and checked out next week, so it is ready when camshaft and crankshaft bearings arrive.

An update on the fuel delivery and ignition system. The decision has been made to install Ted's EFI system on this engine to get best performance out of the engine. Also to eliminate constant tweaking to keep it operating at its best performance.
