My '62 PG 8-door Corvan
Posted by: Pedigo ()

Bigger fool for buying or bigger fool for walking?

I typically don't post before the deal is done,or ask for pricing opinions (with amount),but I'm on the fence with this one.

Super dry and titled 8-door panel with original FC powertrain, but the 7th and 8th doors are passenger-side cargo doors. (I almost, actually,I "did" miss this at first but someone enlightened me). My road trip started @ 4:00am and I hadn't noticed.

My dilemma is finding correct doors and the impossible to find,8-door handle/mechanism.

Great van!
But those damn doors...

What say you?

(I will be uploading a lot of pics,so bear with me)

Other than the left quarter panel, it looks intact, original, and rust free. The automatic trans is a big plus IMO.

I need an education: What makes the left-side doors wrong? Is the handle on the wrong door or something else?

Assuming the engine runs, I think it's a good value for $2000 considering its rust-free condition. You would spend 3x that to fix the rust in your other 8-door, not including paint. This one, like any other, will take another $10k to make it nice though.

Have you ever driven a Corvan? Unlike the Greenbrier, the Corvans were built without any sound insulation. I had one I used to call "Rolling Thunder" and this wasn't a random name. Fortunately I only used that Corvan as a"self propelled storage unit".

I would advise driving one one of these days before you get too invested. JMHO

I've never driven a Corvair! smoking smiley

My plan is...

Drive a panel first, then I'll have already set the bar high on the decible meter.
Then all other models will be progressively less noisy, and thereby flat-out enjoyable.

It's an non-runner,but spins nicely.

We are all in different situations in life. I don't feel $2,000 today is much money. Like Craig, I also prefer the PG. Install an oil cooler cover before driving.

We're there many commercial bare-bones PG panels?
Then you add the doors?

The PG like the 4 speed transmission was available as an (pay more) option. I think this was across the board on all Corvairs with the exception of Spyders, Corsas, and probably Yenko Stinger. (Is there any such thing as a PG or 3 speed Yenko?).

The drivers-side cargos should mirror the passenger-side.
Front overlap.
Forward pointing handle.
Handle on front door.

Before you jump to the conclusion that the drivers side doors are incorrect, please consider the fact that Chevrolet did build some vans with this door configuration. I don't know where to find it on the internet, however, I supplied a picture of a Corvair ambulance to someone that was doing research into the ACC and other Corvair ambulance builders. In that one picture, the doors on the passenger side of the vehicle were reversed, so the attendant could enter the vehicle without opening both doors. If you check the locking mechanism at the floor, you can determine if the vehicle was build like this, or it was modified at some time in its prior history.

I did extensive research of the FC conversion vehicles and posted everything I found here:

which includes an inventory of all of the vehicles about which some information exists.

I did not come across any pictures of a production conversion vehice that was an 8-door model; and would welcome this so that it could be added to the web page.

There are several pictures of 8-door ambulances in the ads and documents prepared by ACC, however, a careful inspection shows that these all 'mock-ups' -- all the pictures are of the same van outfitted with different roof flashes and internal setups.

Here are two images of my 1961 8-door GB. I saw one of Pedigo's images where it looks like the handle on the left side is on the wrong door. Did Chevy do this? Who knows, but I can't think of a reason why they would have. But I am somewhat perplexed by the feasibility of doing it aftermarket as well. On my 1961 FC, the hinges on the left and right sides do not interchange -- a hinge from the right side will not work on the left side. However, the design of the hinges changed in later years, so maybe interchange later became possible, and maybe the left side rear intermediate door could be replaced with a right-side front intermediate door?
