OT - My next project '65 Mustang 2+2 Restomod
Posted by: cnicol ()
Date: October 07, 2015 07:27AM

I thought I'd bust out of my rut and do something completely different for a change. It's "fun" to learn all about a different vehicle! (Though I did have a '66 Mustang 4-sp Red/Red convertible back in the 70's)

Here's the plan:

Restomod '65 Mustang 2+2

4-wheel disc brakes
New, modern front suspension with rack&pinion power steering
Built 302 with T5-5-speed transmission, headers
Shelby fiberglass hood
Black/Red stripe + Red "Pony" interior

I got the bug thanks to two Corvair guys here on CCF (who may remain unamed to protect their safety - lol)

First picture - dropped off yesterday at my painter's place
Second and third pictures - the goal (not my car obviously, at least not yet)

66 Black Monza 4dr, 4.2L V8 49k
61 Seamist Jade Rampside 140 PG
60 Monza coupe (sold, sniff sniff)
66 Sprint Corsa convt - First car! Re-purchased 43 years later
2+2 gnatsuM 5691

+17 Tons of parts

Hey I like your middle picture, you plan on doing mail delivery with it?

But seriously, cool project! Everybody ought to own at least one Ford along with their Chevrolets. I'm a little further down the road on something similar but a little more old school with my Ranchero (same floorpan as you); 302 built to Shelby specs, 5 speed, 9", plus Maier Racing suspension front and rear. The mechanicals are finished, paint work done, and now am in process of final assembly . . .

Even though OT, it will be fun to see periodic updates as to your progress.

'64 and '65 Falcons and Rancheroos great styling. Certainly equal to the Mustang, maybe better in some angles.

V8 on the brain; definitely! I've been missing out ever since I sold the '65 Fuelie Corvette (Though the V8 Corvair is a better driver)

Going to look great when finished Craig. I owned a factory triple black 66 GT convert that was a factory test car in the late 80's and did a full resto on it. My uncle bought it off of one of his students in 68'. It is still in the family. My cousin Beth has it now and drives it about 3 days a week still.

Have you heard of this guy? [www.fly-ford.com]
It looks like his spec sheet hasn't been updated in awhile, but his '66 coupe looks like the car you plan to building. 302, 5 spd, 4 whl discs and his own suspension upgrades.

Marlon has an alignment shop in Canoga Park and enjoys a pretty good reputation with a lot of the Mustang guys. He sell a line of suspension parts. The Mustang mags have in years past, shot a lot of their how to articles in his shop. [www.fly-ford.com]

His alignments are old school without computers and lasers. His alignments are as much seat of the pants as anything. He'll take a car on/off the rack several times for test drives if needed. He learned from his dad Marlo, who opened the shop many decades ago. I take everything there for alignment, but never a ford. GGG

I'm planning to restomod my 65 Mustang, but plan on keeping a six cylinder in it.

This is the six, an Australian Ford SOHC 4.0L out of a 1998 Falcon.

@ Moto One Corvair engine in the front, one in the middle. Trunk's too small for one in the back.sad smiley

@ Dan: Cool engine! Where did you find that! (I was tempted by a pair of 250 CID OHC Pontiac Sprint sixes a couple of weeks ago but not for the Mustang)

@ Chance: I would do a Coyote motor except you have to remove the strut towers to make it fit and I already have the coil-over front suspension that needs the strut towers. Drat! No way would I put a Chevy engine into a classic Ferd. If it was a Camaro, then LS would be a no-brainer.grinning smiley I'm trying to make it a little nostalgic so it's even going to have a carburetor on the "later mode" ('93) roller-motor.

The Mustang is the enemy of the Corvair. People think it's Ralph Nader but no, it's the Mustang. 1964 1/2 was the beginning of the end. Of course that's just my opinion and I could be wrong. I'm kidding a little. My wife would like to have one, sometimes she just like to bother me.

My wife always told me she wanted a convertible mustang, but could never find the model she liked. Then at a car show one day she came running up to me. She had found the convertible mustang she was always talking about. We walked over, and she said what do you think? I asked her are you talking about this car right here?, because there was no fords in sight. She looked at me confused, and said yes. Well it was a Corvair! Well and the rest is history lol!

Yes, the Mustang was a major player of the demise of the Corvair but if there was any enemy it was not the Mustang but instead the American public and Chevrolet's response.

It did not matter how good the 65 Corvair was, and it certainly was and still is, Americans voted with their pocket books. And the results were not pretty. Not counting the 64-1/2's, the 65 Mustang outsold the 65 Corvair by almost 2.4 to 1. While the reception by the automotive press of the 65 Corvair was very positive America in general just wasn't buying it. With the number one goal of making money Chevrolet's response was predictable, spend their development money on the Camaro which was direct competition to the new sales phenomena and let the Corvair wither away . . .
