OT- for bearing Gurus
Posted by: richard1 ()
Date: July 31, 2015 08:59AM

I've never really sat down to look closely at bearings, but today I received the ones we pulled out of my 2002 Toyota HiLux 2.7 EFI that has 280,000 miles on it.

The mechanic disassembled the engine before finally finding the small crack in the head leading a valve seat. So I bought a new head and while we are at it changing the bearings and rings, etc.

But my question is, in looking at the bearings, they are ridged. And the ridges are still there 280,000 miles later.

Why the ridges? Do they help oil flow?

I wouldn't mess with the bearings if they don't appear to be worn. Plastigage it, and if it is in spec, then leave it along. If the rings are not worn, and the engine is tight, just replace the head and put it back together. If it isn't broken, don't try to make it better. All too often, I have seen engines "rebuilt" that didn't need it, and they didn't run as well as before they were messed with.

If I had been there I would have run a compression check and never pulled more than the head. But since they disassembled it all, not even marking what bearings were where, I'll replace them.

I've noticed that on the few I've torn apart.... all trucks...70-80's...

And they all looked good as well...

Ridges? to increase oil film cushioning??

Are they spiral or concentric? Hard to tell from the pics.

The grooves are spiral, suggesting they are cut by lathe or some sort of thread cutter. I personally have not seen bearings like that before, but seems like a similar idea to the grooves on transmission syncros.

Interesting - I wonder if it helps the oil stay in the bearing area, to improve - what?

Might it improve oil holding for startup? Increase the effective width of the bearing by impeding flow to the side?

I guess it is possible those are just tool marks from a suitable manufacturing process.

I can see a couple of reasons for the grooves, oil retention even while running and less friction if the bearing would contact the crank.

By the looks of the bearing you showed and if all the rest look like that, I would just put the bearings back in the engine. Position? It doesn't look like it matters. I take it the crank is smooth?

My guess is they help channel the oil within the bearing before it is forced out, but it is only a guess.

Ken, that's also a good thought about taking the pressure off the whole bearing.

Interesting to note that after so many miles they are still there and still looking good.

Thanks. Good read

But I don't think it applies here, as these grooves are parallel. But now I understand the purpose of the grooves on the thrust bearings and on the grease seal washers on the Mini suspension.

Posted a query on an engineering forum. Got some discussion, nothing definitive.
If you have any of those old ones left around, it would be interesting to know what the depth of those grooves.

It's hardly critical, since the inserts were replaced.
But certainly a point of curiosity.

I'm curious to know the answer too. I did a little googling and ended up at a Vandervell (bearing maker) site.Click here

Curiously, and opposite to what we see in your engine's bearings, their point was to minimize the length of the "regular" oil distribution groove to provide more flat bearing area for a larger oil film area and increased bearing capacity.

It's like old thinking vs some kind of new thinking. The question is, which is the newer thinking? I'm certain Toyota had good reason for grooving the bearings and it's hard to argue with your engine's good result, but then your engine no doubt has the best possible oil scenario since it's in the hands of the master. cool smiley
