Replace EM Stripped Rear Motor Mount Bolt?
Posted by: corvairrich ()

Has anyone had an EM rear motor mount lower bolt (the single one with castle nut) strip on them? Any recommendations? Bolt is also loose in mount.

You can send the mount to Steele Rubber to be restored.
I just saw a used one on evilbay for $18.

The vendors that support this site have them available, too.

They aren't to expensive but if it comes apart and the engine drops, that would cause lots of other damage.

Replace it!

Seen it several times through the years. Look at the threads closely, most of the time it is the nut that is bad. However if in doubt replace both mount and nut. It is the only thing holding your engine in place at the rear.

Does it matter if you use a non 7/16-20 castle nut on the rear motor mount ?

Steve sez: Not sure what you mean. 7/16x20 is thread
so nothing else will just screw onto the stud. If you
mean a nut style other than a castellated nut for a cotter
pin I suppose a lock nut will work but why?

As I said in the beginning of this thread in March of 2015
the threads on the stud MAY be suspect. That one stud/nut
is holding the powertrain in place in the rear, don't
take chances or shortcuts.

Early Corvairs do not have a one piece rear mount. It is simply a bolt sandwiching a few bushings together. There is no stud and no rebuilding the mount. If the nut strips on the bolt, simply cut it off and install a mew bolt and castle nut. Does ANYONE have shop manuals?

Well 60 used bolt through rubber bushings but 61-4 used a rubber mount with a stud out the bottom. Different mounts for a/c cars plus 64 too.

Those sure were rebuilt by Lynn Steele and Bob Galli when he owned True tube and the vendors offered them with core charge to get old ones back.

If chance1 has an FC or a 60 and didn't identify his year/model then I fell prey to making the assumption he had a 61up car. This points to the need for everyone to have a sig line.

Get a replacement used or refurbished mount from Corvair Ranch in Gettysburg. That would seem to be the most reliable and relatively fast solution to your situation
