Corvair Engine Numbers
Posted by: Vairlyrunning ()

Hey Guys,

I'm Curious. I have a Turbo engine in my 1966 Corvair Convertible. On the Engine block it reads the correct RL but then their a heck of a lot more numbers after it.

It goes like this T0427 RL H7970/...

I have never seen that last portion before. Also, their could be more numbers after that zero because the engine shroud covers the rest.
What do you guys think? I have a mystery on my hands.

I'd like to hear any possible ideas.

Thanks.

hmm.
That could be a possibility. The end portion is written in a different text. It is written bolder and larger.

Any other Ideas?

Some engine builders back in the day put their own numbers on engines they built to mark them for their own paper work. I have seen some with numbers and peoples last names.

The 1968-9 engines had the VIN on the block. I guess to prove if the engine was original. My 1963 Monza has a 1969 engine in it with the donor VIN on it. Now I can't enter a Concours as the engine has been replaced! :-)

There are classes that allow for engine swaps, check the CORSA rule book.

Steve, I should have said factory stock class! It doesn't matter as I find car shows boring. I'd rather go in a tour! :-)

"car shows boring"
Not when they encompass many other fun events. Example: The Homecoming

Could the Engine come from a Canadian built Corvair? In Canada, they stamped the engines with partial VIN:s even in 1965 and 1966.

There are a few possibilities listed for a ZH stamped block.

1960-63 80-84 horsepower with powerglide and 1964 95 HP with PG.

You didn't say what your car is...does it fall into one of these.

Thanks Phil,

my car is a 1964, PG with 110 HP. My VIN number tells me that my car is a Canadian car. Does your attachment is for USA or Canadian model, or both?

Not sure...send a p/m to Caveman_1960 as Pete will know.

Or I'm certain that some other "expert" will chime in here.

The 68-69 VIN numbers are smaller than the other numbers the factory stamped.

Hi,

it seems that T is for Tonawanda, the "05II" is for assembly date May 11th, and the last 2 letters are explain in the table: ZH is for 1964, PG, 95HP.

Strange because my fan shroud have a sticker of 110 HP. I will check for my heads numbers to see if they are head of 95 or 110.

Thanks everybody.

Mike,
To help determine it that is the original engine to your car, check the Fisher Body ID plate in the engine bay. The first line is a code with two numbers and a letter that show the month and week that the body was made by Fisher. In most cases the date of the body is shortly after the engine build date code. Usually a week or two.
If the engine date is after the body build date, then obviously it's not original to the car.

All Corvair engines were built in Tonawanda NY, even the engines for Canadian Corvairs. Last year of production in Oshawa was 1966.
As far as I know, no engines had a serial number on them prior to 1968. Exception would be those sent out overseas. Kent Sullivan's site mentions those assembled in Belgium and Switzerland.

Hi,

I took a picture of my body tag but it was not good, so here is the information:

05B that seems to be the date; 05 = May, B = second week. Engine has May 11th)

Style 64-0967 (1964, 967 = convertible 2 door)
Body WR 5705 (body made in Willow Run, number 5705 to be made this year)
Paint 900-5 (black)
Trim 781 (Red interior)
ACC AL-2 (???)

Someone know what the last line is?

Mike

Mike,
What do you say your car is Canadian?
Willow Run is Michigan, USA

Engine code date just before body build date = most likely original thumbs up

I think that I made a mistake when decoding the VIN number: 4967O01667. I thought that the "O" would mean Oshawa that was the assembly plant in Canada. Maybe the "O" is for Okland USA...

I went back to see all VIN, engine tag and body tag this morning,

Body tag: Slyle 62-0967 (Which mean year 62)
engine last letters are ZH that was used for 1964, PG, 95 HP) I have a PG on my car
VIN is 4967O01667 (first letter mean 1964)

Is that really possible the body was built 2 years before the VIN were put and engine assembly? Or would that result of a restoration? First characters on body tag are 05B which mean May, second week and date on engine is 0511 which mean may 11th, which would let me think body tag was put in the same week of engine. Would a typo error could have occur on body tag print 62 instead of 64?

So many question, mayby no answer...

Mike
