I do the same for any "new to me" Corvair as well. I appreciate all the knowledge and skills shared here though.

Resurrecting a old thread here. I have been practicing disassembly of old wheel bearing assemblies, a guy here had some on his scrap pile that were lock up and going to be trashed and gave them to me. One of the spindles I had turned down by one of the guys local here and made me a slip fit tool. Looking at your picture, what is the black piece you have bolted to the top Mr. Dave? Next will be sourcing me a decent dial indicator.

WOW --- this thread ran for some time.

I found out from experience --- When using a cut down spindle one must torque to spec. to get the correct end play. The spindle collar that the shims set on were crudely made and seem to compress probably due to not being exactly square. Some only change 0.001" while torquing, others as much as 0.004". Based on that I wonder how accurate the shim selection tools work.

BTW The GM end play tolerance is very generous. For optimal bearing life I set the play at 0.002 - 0.003" per Steve Goodman's suggestion (oiled, no grease until final assembly)

Ah I remember asking you that before now. See it looks like the spline part of the spindle got turned also. I didn’t get mine turned I assume it’ll be okay to press on and off.

I will ask about cutting a yolk down like that. Really like that setup.
