yenko style engine hood flaps, anyone do a template
Posted by: Mjposner ()

I like the look of the Yenko engine vent flaps. Anyone do this, and how did it turn out? Any templates available?

Mj, have you done a search? The reason I ask I remember a thread of someone I believe that did just as you are asking. The post was quite some time back, but I do remember it.

Good luck on the hunt.

On the same subject, has anyone just cut the flap holes and used a steel lid? I am considering doing this while I save the funds for the real deal.

Remember, there's a lot more to the Yenko flap assembly than just the flaps themselves. The flap has to fit flush into a molded, recessed frame and the interior reinforcement has to be cut away, to not obstruct the hinges and prop rod. If you want some closeup photos or templates of the area, perhaps I can be of some help.

I saw it once on a steel decklid. The flaps were fixed in the open position. I didn't care for the look of it. Not sure how the interior support was modified to clear the new openings.
I will add this, I have a Yenko Decklid ready to go on my autocross car, and everytime I really get ready to put it on, there's rain on race day and I'm glad I don't have it on the car. The real Yenko lids funnel water into the engine compartment. The flaps do not keep water out at all. Just an FYI.

I have a steel decklid here that was modified to remaster the Yenko-style decklid. I'll take a photo of the backside to show the interference areas.

Agreeing with you completely, Mike. The flaps add that extra rain problem and leave your car vulnerable to water leakage at all times, even with the flaps closed.

This photo shows the original steel decklid during the remastering. It shows the stock underside reinforcements that partially block the flap inlets. I'll take an underside photo to add to this.

During the process, a spoiler section that was taken from the mold of the original, was bonded into position. If anyone would like just this spoiler section, to add to their existing hood, I could supply that, along with the blocker plates at each end.

Just PM me.

If you are doing one for your car you can pretty much do what you like I have one I can measure real quick then you would just need to round the corners a bit to make you template. The measurements are 14" wide by 4" tall.

I love seeing any of Mel's photos. thumbs upthumbs up
Re-mastering a Yenko decklid is probably a good idea. My street lid was pretty cattywampus and required lots of "adjustments".

Hey Bob, I followed each of your painstaking adjustments and recognized the same problems on my original part. But what I liked best of all, was your over-center retainer mechanism for the flaps. Brilliant!
You should sell kits to the rest of us!
I'd buy a couple of sets...

Bob - While not quite as nice as Mel's, the last run of Decklids by ADE and sold by Ken Holm, Bill Elliott and myself were also run on a remastered mold and were of far greater quality than the mid 90's to early 2000's run. I beleive Jeff Ballard owns the mold that Arch used. John Gray has one of these decklids on his green '69 with the Fitch roof.

Rod, contact them and find out the pricing! 2.5 lb seems heavy...must be shipping weight?

Done correctly, those might actually look good and solve the rain problem.

I graciously agree with everyone that these new found decklid vents should simply be named and referred to as "Rods Vents"

I did this on the repro decklid I put on 117. It's close to the original, except there is no retainer around the slide, it has 2 magnets instead of one and the magnet housing is metal instead of plastic. Mount is a little different too, since it's one of the decklids with the stock style liner. It's been road tested to 110 at VIR and held tight for 12 years so far.

Okay who will do this? I would love to see how this would look. Would probably paint gloss black as well.

Initially I thought they'd look good, but IMO they're too narrow and I'd be concerned they'd look to motorhome-ish.
