Steve - it depends what you mean by "in". I have seen a couple of the swaps and the motor hangs out the back a ways!

I'd bet the answer to your question could come from Larry Claypool (He is too smart about business to spend much time on here!) But he has both the Renault - actually a Dauphine - he calls it "The dope fiend" and, "several" Corvairs. The Renault had the swing axle rear suspension. I drove one delivering drugs in high school. Uh, that is prescription drugs for Crow Pharmacy in Palo Alto, CA. It was a white Dauphine with a 4-speed. I know it will be hard to believe, but the shifter in that car was even more vague than an early Corvair FC. If you can shift one of those, you can shift anything! The car has a sign mounted on the roof. The sign could spin around, but was anchored near the front so it would straighten out at about 10 MPH. I remembered getting the sign spinning in the parking lot using the gas and the brake. Actually, the car was very reliable and easy - if not fun - to drive.

Richard, your work is awesome! That axle looked toasted. Great job.

This is the only picture I have of the VW engine in the Caravelle. The space in the engine bay seems to be enough for a Corvair engine. If someone was to retain the VW transmission and flip the ring gear, it could be doable.

Nothing if you like Reenie Teenie engines. Just consider it a major upgrade. I'd like to restart a trend, put a Vair engine in everything.

Steve:

Friend and former Corvair owner Rob Phillips raced a Caravelle here in Portland as late as 2015. The engine room was very short indeed as I recall.

I like the old movies where the French Police come swarming in Renault Dauphines.
The Archer Brothers Ice Raced Dauphines back in the day.
French cars are a trip, man.

1960 Renault Caravelle at Sears Point. Was astounded to see one at Laguna Seca a few weeks ago (probably the same car). [vintageracecar.com][gal_2]/7/

Dig those three lug wheels with the hubcap held on by a center bold.

When someone mentioned Vintage Racing a Renault my mind started to churn. At The SCCA Regional races at Brainerd in about 2005 I was in the paddock next to Bob Youngdahl with a Renault and I wondered if it was a Caravelle. I did a Google search and found it was a Renault Alpine, a car the Archer Brothers ran in SCCA FP in the 70s. I was running SCCA EP and he was running Vintage so we were not on the track in the same group.

Bob lived half the time in Minnesota and half the time in Florida. He was killed about 5 years ago at home in Florida while unloading after the races, a spring on the race trailer door let go and hit him in the head. I guess you just never know.

I don't remember why the Archer's were so big on racing Renaults back in the day, I wonder if they had a dealership in Duluth. Last I heard of them was with a Viper in Trans Am.

Some of the other rear engine cars back in the day were pretty nifty as well.

My Dad had a spring break on his toy hauler ramp door.

The door landed on his right foot and crushed it good.

Compared to what happened to Bob we were very lucky.

I would really think about MID-engine in a Caravelle... that much weight in the rear will make it scary! IMO Had a Gordini..

Talk about goofy cars. I had an '81 Fiat that had no center hole in the wheels. Made them impossible to balance.
