Convertible Top Coloring Dye

I am new to this Forum. I am currently restoring a 63 ragtop. The white top is in good condition with the exception of some bird stains and dingy look. I scrubbed it with Ajax which cleaned much of it off but I would like to freshen the white color. Anybody have any experience with this on a white top? Thanks! I would like to add my signature to my post but I don't know how!

Back in the 70's and 80's before current EPA stuff you could buy a quart of ready to spray vinyl dye for $30 and make your vinyl top or interior look new again. I think it's $120 plus now for a flexible dye product. I think their are other hardeners or whatever beyond the dye itself that add even more to the price. I am talking about spray gun application not rattle can. Don't think you could rattle can spray a top without it looking blotchy.

I suggest that you use Westleys Bleech white- a tire cleaner. It will work wonders with a soft wire brush. Try here for a brush. [www.amazon.com]
The tire cleaner will really do a great job.

There is a product sold at the Dollar Store called Awesome. hand spray application, I think it's sold also in bigger jugs also. Give that a try, it seems to clean everything and it's cheap.

Hi corvairrich !

Take a look at Pat Paldino's thread [corvaircenter.com]

I had a private conversation with him & he suggested me SEM #15313 for a white top.

Good Luck & show us the results smiling smiley

2nd on the Westleys Bleech white- a tire cleaner. Also, Oyx Clean mixed into a paste and leave it on for an hour or so and rinse. If its still there give it a second coat.

The tops can be cleaned fairly well, but the stitching will darken and it is impossible to get the threads clean white. For a daily driver, cleaning is fine. Be sure to flush and rinse with lots of fresh water afterwords. Residues will yellow a white top.
Bottom line... I found that nothing beats a new top for clean. But I only had convertibles for show cars.
