Corvair gas mileage
Posted by: Mike R ()

Hello,
I was wondering what was the gas mileage roughly for an average Corvair. Also, how do they compair against other air-cooled cars, ie a Volkswagon Bug.

Thanks.

Mike

Anywhere from about 16-30+. Lots of factors. Driving style, engine condition, engine size, engine modifications, tire size, tire pressure, speeds that are being driven.....

I have checked my mileage twice in over 3,500 miles. First check was right after rebuild, Otto 20 cam and wider tires, I got about 20 mpg. After about 3,000 miles I checked on the way back from the Clarks show and got just over 22 mpg.

I was getting 15 mpg city, 21 hwy on my 140 prior to starting my rebuild. Engine had 30 over pistons, stock cam, headers, heads with gasket step removed, and a center mount Holley 390 carb.

When I get it back together (hopefully withing the next three weeks), I'll see how it's doing then. It will have an Isky 280 cam in it, in addition to the other mods listed above.

I usually get 28 highway in my convertible, that is driving hard and fast. Maybe 22-24 in town. Cleaned heads on a 102, 3:27, dual H-pipe exhaust. 185/80/13 tires.

Our Greenbrier with the 3.89 gearing gets 16 mpg around town and 19-20 mpg on the open highway regardless of the load I'm hauling at the time.

I drove a friend to Detroit, MI. from NW Indiana. This was interstate all the way. Going I held a steady 75 mph. I remember I got 26 mpg. That was about what I normally got (65 coupe, 4spd 3.27 gear, B-60-13 tires about 1.5" shorter, 110 Hp.) I did 65 all the way home to see any economy and was somewhat puzzled by the worst mileage on the tank homeward. Then I remembered we crossed over to Windsor, Ontario where I filled up before heading home = Imperial gallons. When I recomputed it was closer to 28 mpg.

Mileage may vary.........
On economy runs, I have seen results in the high 50's.
But a lot can depend on if it is a stick car, or automatic.
High horsepower or low horse.
and the way it is driven as well.
I did 23 mpg on the economy run last year with my 65 Monza convert. 110 automatic. Probably get like 20 r5egular driving....................

If you're getting over 20mpg, you're not trying hard enough. It's a sports GT, not an economy car! ;-)

Seriously, to put it in perspective, on the 10,000 mile trip ( [fnader.com] ) this summer in a fully loaded 110/PG /3.55 powered Westy camper (likely well over 4000lbs and the aerodynamics of a house), my wife averaged 19.0 mpg.

So this should be just about "worst case" for highway travel...

Not your average corvair , but for what it's worth....

My Ultra Van #215 with a massaged 110(runs on regular)
and less than 4K on a new engine has averaged between
15-17mpg.

I get about 27 mpg highway with the top down doing 75 and up. Round town is low 20's.

EDIT: that was with a failing fuel pump. It was misting the engine compartment.
