66 Monza Reassembly
Posted by: kenzen ()

Finally got some epoxy primer on the 66 restoration this weekend. Contractor bags make a great way to quickly mask up tires and a steering wheel. I threw in a "before" photo to note this car had a major nose job as well...grinning smiley

Finally something photo worthy - just shot a few coats of high-build 2K primer. Now to begin another sortie of block sanding...hope to paint it in the next few weeks. smiling smiley

Re: Back in Black...then primer...then merlot

...and two years later...

I've got some major catch up to here, since I realized time spent on my computer is not time spent getting my vair back together.

Here's a link to the "nose job" I did as the last major body repair:
http://corvaircenter.com/phorum/read.php?1,399061,636354#msg-636354]nose job[/url]

Last summer's goal was to paint the car. The first hurdle was to build something of a spray booth to contain the overspray and control the dust/bugs. Attached is some external shots of the spray booth, which occupies the middle bay of my garage. It's basically some white marine tarps hung over two ropes pulled the length of my garage, with a large window fan pressurizing it. Air is filtered in and out, and the positive pressure makes it blow up like a big marshmellow. I used a normal interior door for access, and hung fluorescent light fixtures around the interior. There will be interior pictures of the booth as I post the car painting progress in this thread. I use a LVLP spray gun, that is very efficient (but slow), so the amount of paint overspray/fumes is very low. My personal schedule, combined with a very hot humid summer kept me from moving forward with painting, which brings me to this summer.

With the booth built and functional, I focused on the car itself. It's in parts so the doors/lids were done separately. Here's two shots of the body after final block sanding of the high-build primer, and then a fresh coat of reduced primer as prep for the base coat and clear coat.

With the fresh primer on it was painting time. Note, this is the first time I've ever painted a car, so this is a kamikaze effort. My wife is an artist, and she simply replied when I expressed concern of screwing it up "it's only paint"...so caution to the wind I moved on. The color is "Merlot", a stock color by Kirker. I bought a Kirker paint kit containing black epoxy primer, a buff 2k primer, the basecoat paint, and the clear coat.
