Time for a minor update. I've been waiting for a couple of custom forged pistons to show up. These pistons have been made twice, and both times they
were screwed up! The first time, they made late pistons, even though the instructions were for the short stroke pin height, not the late. The next time
they got the pin height correct but then forgot to offset the wristpin. ARRGH!
Anyways, while I'm waiting for my pistons and cylinders to show up, I started
working on a pair of manifold adapters. The ultimate plan is to build a 2" ID
stainless steel cross over manifold, and for that to fit, I needed to make some adapters that would go from a 2" id, to a 1.5" i.d.
The first photo shows the adapter plate before outer edge contouring, the next
2 shows the final outer edge shape and shows how the plates are bolted to the
head via the socket head cap screws. The smaller holes adjacent to the socket head cap screws are pilot holes... these need to be drilled and tapped, and those are the holes that the S.S. manifold flanges will bolt to.

Did the parts come yet, so you can get your fan back on the car?

Great work so far.

Troy- Unfortunately, no parts yet. In the meantime I have been able to do some preliminary fan testing that simulates the pressures and rpms seen near an
engine speed of 1000 rpm- the results have left me extremely encouraged...
It really does seem to be performing about as well as it looks, although I'm
still working to establish as best I can its ideal, optimal set-up before
I put the engine back together. Its super important for me to find out as
much as I can about this fan now as it is not easy to change fan related stuff (because of the efi), and I seriously do not want to find that I have to rip
the engine out again to tweak the fan set-up some more.

This weekends project is finished... gapping piston rings, putting the rings on the pistons, putting the pistons in the cylinders. This is the first time
I've done this on a Corvair engine. In the past I farmed that part out, and got
piston and cylinder sets ready to install. Once I got past the struggle of the
first piston install in its bore, I got the hang of it and couldn't believe how much fun it was... It reminded me of all those times when I was a kid doing the same thing on my various motorcycles. When I have to do this operation next time (hopefully many many years from now!!) I'm going to have to do it the
same way... way fun!

As you can see... all the unmodified assemblies are easy and quick.... it's when you start mod'ing!

Its DEFINITELY easier to just put the thing together like stock, as opposed to
modifying! hopefully this next weekend I should be mostly done with the engine
assembly... Gotta super trick fan to test you know!!

Well, this is "progress"! I had to stop at this point, as I have to replace
one of the cylinder studs. I had forgotten that when the engine was disassembled, one of the lower studs unthreaded with the rocker arm studs. When
I went to try and remove the cylinder stud from the rocker stud, I ruined the
cylinder stud...big massive gouges where the bench vise jaws and vice grips were holding it. I was going to re-use this stud anyways, until I found the
threads on the rocker arm end were buggered from being extremely bottomed out
on the rocker arm stud. I decided it was junk at that point. I found another
to use, but that one seemed to not have enough interference in the case. Even
with a big load of red Loctite it had insufficient holding torque so I'm going
to wait to finish the piston and cylinder install until I get the stud I need.

I ended up using a time sert the last time. The stud pulled a lot of aluminum with it and I didn't trust an oversize.

More progress for this weekend... I installed a +.003 oversize stud using copious amounts of red locktite for thread "lubricant". That stud is NEVER
coming out, ever! Next was to put the last remaining cylinder on, cylinder
baffles, lifters, and install the top cover. I had to stop at this point, 2
of the top cover bolts wouldn't quite get to the same torque as the others,
and feel like they are starting to strip. This might be reason enough go ahead
and repair the two partially stripped holes and then replace all of the bolts
with studs.

Oh YOu KNOW IT!! I cant believe how long I've been OBSESSING about every last
tiny little detail of this fan, over and over again. For YEARS! The closer I get to having the engine done, the closer I get to actually testing it for REAL
instead of the zillions of fan law simulations/predictions and bench testing with the fixture... nothing beats building it and trying it for real!
