I could have been badly injured.
Posted by: red64vair ()

The post by unsafe62 about finding the finger under the top shroud prompted me to post this.

Many times with the engine running I have reached in and slightly adjusted the distributor. Though not a smart thing to do I have done this at night without a light. Recently I was seriously made aware of how stupid and dangerous this was when the first thing I touched was the drive belt of the recently installed AC compressor. I could have been badly injured. I think I will install a engine compartment light.

I think you better learn to "Static time"... we have no timing chain to cause fluctuations..

Here's a tip. (oops, bad reference!)
When the engine is turned off, back off the nut on the distributor hold down just enough to allow the distributor to move with some resistance.
Then fire up the engine and use a stick of some kind to do the moving! It shouldn't take much to get the timing marks where they need to be.
Then shut off the engine and tighten that darn nut.

Fingers are fun! Keep 'em where they belong!

I don't think they make flannel hoodies with draw strings. grinning smiley So Motohead should be able to keep his head right where it belongs.

In the early 70's I was the long haired guy who did get his hair caught in a drill press, I never told the boss, because I wanted to keep my tool and die job.
When I was a teenager, a neighbor was killed when a concrete block collapsed and the car he was working on crushed him. I have used quality jack stands ever since.
If you remove a distributor, with the key on, with the points wire attached, with the engine flooded, an arc will occur as the distributor looses contact with the block, the flooded fuel in the oil will explode out the distributor hole and burn the hair off your face and forehead. If it were not for my glasses I could have lost my sight.
Let's be safe and learn from others mistakes.

I may be overly careful but two days ago I took the autocross car " the Geezer " for a test drive before loading on the trailer for the trip north and to the convention, the starter bendix was acting up and had trouble getting it started, once on the trailer I then decided to change out the starter, I raised it up with two jacks and two more as jackstands ( no room for jackstands ) its a dovetail trailer so not too bad to get under, had to reach around diff to get that top bolt out. it's changed and working well. A side note: Had wife standing buy and she said what will I be able to do?? I said call 911 if it falls.

I have long hair and the other day when I was looking at my PG leak I realized how close I was to the slowly spinning rear hub. That wouldn't have been fun.

Next to impossible to safely adjust the distributor timing on an A.I.R. (smog) car with the engine running. Yeah it is annoying to stop the engine, knudge the distributor, start and check again, BUT I have all my fingers.

I used to flip the accelerator in the engine compartment by grabbing the throttle cross shaft at the bend for the blower bearing hub.

One day I slightly missed and ground the skin off the tip of my finger, as the engine was running at 3 grand or so, hence why I reached quickly for the throttle.

Never since have I grabbed the throttle there. I now use the bell cranks on the left side of the cross shaft.

I do adjust distributors with my hand while the engine is running, but with good light and not when A/C or smog belts are there. I leave the nuts slightly loose so I can adjust the distributor at will. A leftover habit from the 70s/80s when gasoline kept changing, so timing also needed changing. Especially on my 10 : 1 compression 455 Buick. I've never had one change, I don't leave them that loose.

My one early oops on a Corvair was my 64 Spyder convertible. I was changing the rear shocks. Car on jack stands, but no support below rear brake hub assembly. I removed the top shock nut. Backing plate dug into the driveway just missing my foot.eye popping smiley

I got a lot smarter after that. Wait, I still work on Corvairs?

A few of us local club members were parting out an EM coupe the other day. We had all kinds of semi-dangerous fun while using power tools!!
After we had the UniPak out, top cut off and the doors removed, someone says "Let's flip it on it's side to take off the stuff underneath.
Four of the guys actually started to grab the body (up on jack stands) and began to try to move it!

I'm standing right next to a hydraulic floor jack. I yelled out a "Stop Order" and told everyone that were are absolutely NOT going to attempt any dead lifts!

Using the floor jack, some various lumber around we easily got the body on it's side and put braces down to the ground while we removed the front and rear suspension, heater box, tunnel goodies, etc.

It's amazing what a bunch of "macho dudes" will attempt without thinking it through, sometimes.

They passed around a safety bulletin at my employer about a welder that was seriously injured wearing a stringed hoodie. He was leaning over his weld with an angle grinder and the string caught in it and pulled the grinder into his face. I warn all my contractors and ask them to remove their hoodie strings.

Speaking of Welders living dangerously.
This story has been passed around for good reason:

brewracingframes.com - Cleaners can Kill you!

Using Brake Cleaner that has chloro-tetraethylene along with argon shield when MIG or TIG welding can lead to DEATH from Phosgene gas poisoning. Read the article, just a whiff can put you in a very bad situation!

eye popping smileyeye popping smiley Wow! That's scary. Thanks for posting that. I have used brake cleaner and argon in my garage, just not at the same time. I will keep this in mind.
