How to remove headlight housing, stripped bolt.

I'm in the process or replacing all the headlight rivets with the screw kits from Ebay and all is going well except for the driver side.

I tried to remove the "splash guard" from behind the front wheel well but one of the bolts is stripped and the nut just spins in place. I tried to put the nut from the adjacent bolt and was able to make threads for it. But the inside nut just won't catch onto the new thread.

So I'm wondering if I can just drill through the big rivet and take it out, or if there is any other suggestions to make my life a bit easier.

What are my options?

1) Is the wheel well splash guard I'm trying to unscrew so I can take out the housing.

2) Is the two big flat rivets that is exposed when you remove the bezel, and then the bulbs..

I have a 61 Monza 2Dr, and that picture is not off my car but just to illustrate. Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure of what bolt you referring too. If it's stripped I would remove it by whatever means works and replace it. I recall having to drill out the rivets on an old broken adjuster and then using bolts and nuts for the new one.

Couldn't you just saw through the nut on the rear of the headlight bucket with a cutoff wheel? When you get the splash shield off just throw it away -- they're next to useless anyway.

Yep, looks like my pic.

I'm not sure what rivets you want to replace. My buckets never had a nut on the bottom stud. You could just cut that off. I just have sheet metal screws in all the perimeter holes and the center hole.

And recommend some rope caulk when you put them back.

You don't have to take the rear splash guard off or the bucket out to change the head light adjusters....

You only need to remove the headlight bezel, the bulbs and the cups. You can drill out the rivets and install the new screw etc while they are still in the car..... grinning smiley

Hey guys, I've taken a picture to better illustrate it. I can't seem to take it off WITHOUT removing the nuts BEHIND the front wheel well. The one on the right side required it..

What can I replace them with? Do I have to find a bolt with a flat head like that? Or do I have the clearance for just any bolt with the same diameter?

Any bolt or panhead machine screw will do.... but I've seen those bolts in real hardware stores...

probably vendors have them and even ebay.. All GM's used those
