The Greenbrier got new wheels today.

These were initially installed on the convertible but the tires were just a bit larger in diameter than I was comfortable with but they seem to work OK on the Van.

These are 15 X 7 Wheels with a 205/65R15 tire.

When these tires age out, I may see if I can find Whitewall tires for it.

Had changed out the o rings on both sides of the diff and one continued to leak, so took the left side out again, properly cleaned the sealing surface and reinstalled. Once the rain stops we will give ol' Red a run down the road.

Strange how the more you work on these, in some ways the easier it gets! Helped pass a rainy morning.

Prepping another Corvair to sell. Sold and delivered the V8 to a new home in February. Delivered the Imposter Corsa to a new home on Thursday. Working this weekend on getting a 65 Monza vert ready to sell. Drove it 45 miles today to a cars-n-coffee event in Scottsdale with no issues other than the chokes needing to be set a bit more for the cool mornings. Had it up to 70 MPH several times on the freeway with no issues.

First time contributing to this thread...

Replaced a LM heater cable that was broken at the dash control end. Had to determine if the cable or the heater vanes were stuck. Took 2 of us all day, removed the blower motor and housing above the rear axle to access the heater cable at the heater vane end.

Turns out the heater vanes still move freely and the cable was stuck, so needed to route a new cable through the tunnel and floorboard. Could not separate the plastic heat duct sections in the tunnel to remove them and afraid to break them because my understanding is no replacement parts are available. So routing the new cable was very difficult. Tried to use the old cable as a guide, but it kept getting stuck so a lot of trial and error to route the new cable above the plastic heat duct down the tunnel. Finally succeeded and the heater works! Also replaced the crumbling accelerator rod bushings while we were under there.

What did I do on my ‘68 2-door coupe today . . well, I removed the starter and took it into the repair shop for a rebuild. BUT, last week I actually did some real “work” on Roxanne.

When she was delivered in December I noticed an area behind the right front wheel well that was not repaired too well. So, after scraping away paint & bondo, I found that the patch had been done over a rust encrusted hole. Then, I found the area was packed with pine needles, leaves and dirt. Shop vac with “custom” nozzle, tweezers and flashlight were used to see and excavate the debris.

After some Dremel sanding and then allowing a rust preventive coating to dry overnight, I packed a roll of ¼” x ¼” hardware cloth into the hole, used my favorite patch material (JB Weld Steel Stik) then primer and a little glazing putty before finishing with the paint & clear coat. Will let it sit for another week before compound, polish & waxing.

Different days, different light can make the Turquoise paint look green or blue?! But at least I’m a little more happy with the patch!

Some of you may recall back in mid February, I mentioned acquiring a pair of N.O.S. Headlight trim rings (Bezels) for the Greenbrier.

Today, it was warm enough to sit them outside for a while to warm up the protective rubberized coating on them and remove it.

After getting the protective coating off, I applied a little Chrome Polish to them to clean up a few small stains they acquired between production and today.

I ran out of motivation for the day but plan on installing new Halogen bulbs to replace the weathered Halogen bulbs that have seen better days, try to aim the headlights then install the new trim rings (Bezels) sometime in the near future.

Here is what I posted back in February.

Recently acquired a pair of N.O.S. Trim Rings from a forum member. When putting the van back together, I re-installed the headlight bulbs and trim rings that it came with.

I will wait until warmer weather to set these out in the sun to soften the protective wrapping that has gotten brittle over the years before attempting to unwrap them and install them.
Maybe by then I will have new bulbs to install.

Didn't do the work, but picked the LW up from having a new headliner installed. After sitting for a long 2 years it seemed the top bows may have rusted and stained the liner, that was in A-OK shape.

Turns out it was due to having mouse condo's set up in the roof... angry smiley

That was the last major project for Ole Blue

Time to give it a good cleaning and continue getting groceries and going to car shows!

Good times a'comin'

In preparation for my trip to the upcoming Lehigh Valley Corvair Club event in Bath PA next Saturday, I cleaned up a couple wiper arms, installed new refills and put them on the Greenbrier.

After that, I installed the NOS Headlight trim (Bezels) and new bulbs in the Greenbrier then tried aiming them (in the daylight).

Once that was done, took it out for about a 45 minute drive.

Fixed my pulling brakes and leaky fuel pump.

More like, what I did "this week" than "today", but close enough.

This morning I replaced the Oil Pressure sending unit/switch on the Greenbrier that had failed last Saturday. I am relieved that there was no other issue.

Back story:

Last Saturday I drove the Greenbrier to the Lehigh Valley Corvair Club all Corvair swap meet in Bath Pennsylvania.
This event was about 150 miles from where I live and a good opportunity to determine the reliability and drivability of the van before venturing out on a longer excursion next month.

A little over three hours into the trip, I was only about fifteen minutes from my destination when I noticed my Oil Temp/Pressure light had illuminated.

Rather than go into detail, I came to the conclusion the Oil Pressure Switch had probably malfunctioned.

I didn't take pictures, but last week I put on my new rear strut rods from PMT Fabrication. Toughest part was getting the outer camber bolts to surrender. Got 2 U pipes from Clarks and now have dual exhaust. I went with Holley 24" glasspacks and the sound is incredible.

I have found that sometimes I have to surrender first.

rebuilt my drive lines,
now I just have to do the same thing to everything else.
should have the entire rear suspension done in the next few weeks before the engine is complete and ready to go

I don't know. The old ones didn't have one, so I didn't know what direction to face it. As few miles as I will put on it, I might have to unbolt them once a year to grease them smiling smiley

The '60 coupe had a pretty brutal whiskey dent in the driver's front fender, just ahead of the door.
Something sharp hit it, and the impact point was a good couple inches deep.

It is centered around the vent opening. Removed the vent door mechanism to see what was there.
Was unaware there are two thicknesses of metal there- the inner structure, and the fender oversitting that.
Normally one would remove the fender, but Corvair, so had to figure out how to address the situation w/o making it worse. Here's another look.

It's a real bummer! Kind of a chore to look at. Very stretched in all directions including a straight vertical stretch against the lower cowl section underneath.
Wonder when it got hit? Maybe in the wrecking yard where it used to live, who knows.

Years ago a sculptor friend gave me an old non-functional Porta-Power kit. Found where I stowed it and repaired it, then put it to work attempting to push out the dent from inside.
Laid out a couple pieces of 4x4 block on the driver's side sill for the Porta-Power to push from.
Very helpful tool. Managed to rough it out but was unsure how I'd smooth what was left as there is no access to the inner fender to dolly and hammer, or so I thought.

What I found after unfolding everything was a factory caulking between the inner and outer fender.
Dug that out, then managed to force first a small then a larger spoon in the inner/outer fender space, then tapped and tapped using a 1-pound copper hammer until I got it to a point where it fit in with the smaller Grandpa dents elsewhere on the vehicle, and without completely destroying what is left of the factory paint.

It's far from perfect thanks to the stretched metal but isn't the same eyesore it was.
I can live with it as the car is a PatinaMobile, and I like the way it looks as is.
