Re: What did you do to your Corvair today?

Went to the local parking-lot car show in Scottsdale yesterday. I was the only Corvair there. I also took my granddaughter (3years old) on her first ride in the Corvair (top down of course). The weather here in Phoenix has been in the mid-70s and driving with the top down is almost a religious experience. The only maintenance I performed was to oil the generator.

I removed my lower shrouds, took out my t-stat doors and then replaced the shrouds. One of the bellows was blown and the other wouldn't open all the way; I suspect some rear end repairs weren't done quite right and the door hit the lower grill when it tried to open. I have a frozen heater cable anyway...and I live in Charleston, SC so working heat isn't exactly a terribly high priority. When I get around to repairing the heater cable and then dealing with the sheet metal below the bumper, I'll put them back in...unles someone here tells me otherwise!

Removed the drive train from the coupe in preparation for the PG to 4-speed swap. It was a good short sleeve day, but cool enough that I wasn't bothered by the hornets again.

What did I do to my Corvair today? Cussed it! No leaks on the 3.27 transaxle I got and installed.....until I put about 100-150 miles on it....both sides pouring!
My fault for not going ahead with replacement of the seals....I thought about it....
Oh well, I got a 4 day weekend in a couple weeks....

It was a nice day for a drive. Mid 40's and sunny. Can't ask for better than that this time of year. I went out for about a 20 mile loop through the country. I no sooner got out on the highway when I noticed some guy in a Toyota MR2 (?) pulling alongside to give me the thumbs up. I look over and honest, it was my physician. We both laughed when we recognized each other. Any day I can spend in the car is a nice day.

Send some of that warm air north, Cliff!

Today I removed the blue 4dr from the barn to make room to work on my '99 Chrysler T&C rust bucket. The brakes failed last week while driving. Still have to diagnose the leak...

The Corvair sure did clatter a lot (lifters?) and woo-wooing from the fan bearing.
Well, can't drive it anyway with all the salt on the road.

I picked up my blower housing for the '64's 140.
It was at a local machine shop getting the new bearing pressed in.
Yesterday I placed an parts order, I'm awaiting a new PG cable and associated hardware.

Other than that, trolled the internet in search of my next one.

Finally fixed the rocker on cyl #5 that wouldn't stay tight on my fresh 65-110 rebuild. Put the nut on the anvil part of my vise and smacked it 3 or 4 times with a 3# drilling hammer. It's nice and tight now. I ran it for close to 40 minutes and no rocker noise. It was 63 degrees here today. I REALLY wanted to take it for a drive but I don't have it registered in MO yet. It still has 2011 MN plates.

Also purchased and installed an electronic flasher in preparation for installing my LED tail lights.

Enjoy the Corvair!

Picked up my rods from the machine shop, the big ends are round! Then dropped off the crank to be polished, or ground.

Still wrestling with the headliner. Found and sorted my bag of interior screws. Sanded and primed headliner metal trim. Installed seatbelt reinforcement on floor behind driver's seat. Ordered new windshield gasket.

Drivetrain is out. Have to track down a couple of stupid leaks (I resealed the engine last spring, but the &(^%#@( thing is still leaking). I am also thinking about rebuilding the front and rear suspensions, so those are coming out next.
