Thanks.
You know what that is, subbing for the missing rubber plug? One of those stainless H or C disks found in certain old water faucet knobs.
Fits perfectly in the hole. Obviously it's weird and wrong but at least it's period-correct!

Finally pulled TurboTurd back out of winter storage! I was busy enough all last year that I didnt even really take the time to drive it, let alone even look at it. I have to play with speedometer calibration and install a handfull of new goodies tomorrow and heading to the first show of the year on Saturday if all goes well!!

Thanks! Just shy of 6000 miles in the last 13 years. I always forget just how clean and crisp it is until I pull it out of storage. I keep going back and forth on if I should keep enjoying as-is, or go through it again and make it into the concours car I was hoping to the first time. Either choice will be fun!

It has a story. Before this restoration, my dad and I built a v8 corvair. So I have a really good idea of what "fast" is. All the old timers and corvair folks said stuff like "when that turbo spools up youd better hang on" amd all the stories about turbo corvairs blowing away fast cars. So I was expecting this to be at least somewhat comparable to a mild 350 because of the stories. The first several drives I couldnt believe what a "turd" it was because it took Forever before any boost happened. And it was a nice little kick, but never ripped my head off my shoulders or got uncontrollable like I was believing it would. Trust me, the turbo setup does work as it should, and from other people, stories and experiences, I feel it is one of the better performing stock setups. Just fell far short of my expectation but the name stuck forever

Cody,
You're not alone, I have a similar story, but it involves a'62 Olds Jetfire. I found it sitting in a junkyard, bought it for $150, with a couple spare turbos in the trunk. I had all the magazine road tests that raved about the performance, made a half dozen trips to the swap meet in Carlisle, Pa. (88 acres) looking for NOS parts. Even found an aluminum case T-10 and the 4 speed console, and a guy in the Indy Corvair club located a NOS porcelainized turbo for me. Through a local TRADER (think Thrifty Nickel) weekly magazine, connected with a young guy that had a '63 Jetfire with the slim jim (Roto-Hydramatic) transmission, which is what my car had originally. He took me for a very disappointing (slow) demo ride, that's when I realized I'd made a mistake. Even though it was a very rare car (less than 3,800 made), I decided to sell it.

Scott,

That is very interesting and I had always wondered about the jetfires, cool to know! But also a bummer. I have been right there, reading and hearing stories and being really excited for a big reward. They were definitely ahead of their time!
It would be interesting to have actually been around at that point, maybe compared to the normal market in those days they really were hot cars.

I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to build a childhood dream car and will never let it go, but with that being said, i never plan to own another turbo corvair either.

I had the same disappointment when I took a ride in a turbo charged 78 Buick Regal. However, when the 86 and 87 Turbo Regals came out they did not disappoint.

This morning I installed a set of reproduction floor mats in the Greenbrier.
I have had these sitting flat on my basement floor for the past several years.

For the front mat, I noted the pre-punched holes for the accelerator pedal were off. My guess is the earlier FC vehicles had a different accelerator pedal design than the '64 & probably '65's.
A little RTV should address this acceptably for my needs. I also had to cut out a section for the pedal actuator mount but it worked out well. Over all, I am quite happy with the mat.

For the center mat, I noted the hole locations for my rear seats were off a little and the mat seemed a little short but this may have been the result of the mat sitting in a cool basement.
Now it is in the van, I will see what happens.

For the rear mat, it seemed a bit large and may require trimming some to fit perfectly.
As I understand it, the more recent rear mats have been updated. I have one of the updated version in red and it fits much better.
Since I installed Black front and center mats, I went ahead and installed one of the original reproduction black rear mats I have so they are the same color.
