I have an old Stewart Warner mechanical oil temperature gauge. The lead for the sending unit is a hard wire /cable but is too short since this is designed for a front engine car.

Do any of you know if there is a way to splice in an ‘extension’ so I could run the gauge all the way to the dash? The connector / cable looks the same as a mechanical water temperature gauge.

Since it's a pressure gauge, the tube can be extended fairly easily. Tubing and fittings are available at "real" auto parts stores. Just get an oil pressure installation "kit" or nylon tubing and compression fittings and make a kit yourself. I think it's 1/8" O.D. Tubing.

Craig, it is a temperature gauge, not pressure. I am not sure how or what is inside the tube.

Oops, misread. Extending the capillary tube in a temperature gauge is not practical. It's filled with a liquid at a calibrated pressure. The only way to extend one is to send it back to the maker for a custom capillary tube. The custom tube cost would likely exceed the cost of a new, electric gauge by quite a bit.

The tube is known as a "bourdon tube". It is filled with a gel or wax that causes the gauge to read. The only way to make it work is to run an oil line from the rear of the car to the front, install the sender, and return the line to the engine. the oil has to pas across the sender or it wont read correctly. Best bet is to find an electric gauge that is close to your mechanical gauge.

If you are after the 'look' of the old SW gauges, SW offers a new set of old black face gauges that are electric senders. Temp/press etc are all available.
