Right 66-9 is 6 bolts and cast side cover not stamped steel.

With the KM... put it all together out of the car...but Ryan / VK knows best....most recent experience..

I assembled my whole powertrain unit right on the floor. I would recommend you do the same, so if there are any issues with mounting, or your starter, or whatever, you can address it easily.

66+ transmissions are "Saginaw", and look completely different than 64-65. 66+ have cast covers, while 65 and older have tin side covers. Probably the easiest way to tell.

As I mentioned in the email, when choosing a clutch, I chose the cheapest crapiest one I could find, in hopes that in an un-ideal situation, the clutch would slip before the input shaft twists. So far this theory has worked okay, I am on my second clutch (20,000 hard miles)

And I'm back, with some progress to report...

So, Drive train is together, and in the car. Tried to stab it with diff and tranny in to no avail, ended up pulling everything, putting it together on the floor, and then gently snaking it into place.

Had a cutoff wheel on an angle grinder in the bell housing adapter for a while to make room for the larger flywheel.

Mounts don't line up, so some work to be done there.
Have to run high pressure fuel line.
Have to change out the exhaust manifolds.
Have to source a harness and computer.
and probably a fair bit more than that.

Was just happy to be back in the garage for a day.

Cheers gang

-Mike

great info and pictures have a crown car as well as a kelmark car
My Kelmark car was built in the early 80's and had almost no trouble until the 327 engine dropped a rod bolt and began knocking badly. I now have to deside to replace the 327/295hp with my spare 327/250hp an easy swap or go with the 4.6 LS motor or put the 305 chev thats in my 65 F85 wagon just to keep presure off the diff.

My Kelamrk car was built buy a vey clever fellow who mainly auto crossed it and seems to work great, he set up an oil slinger to oil the gears and input brg in the diff. I sadly only got to put 50 miles on her until the engine went, so this spring i will be fixing her up.

what ever way i go Ill post the info on this site

i really like the LS idea smiling smiley

PROGRESS...!

Came into a little bit of $ and time.

-Harness and programmed ECM procured
-Headers that fit
-Remote oil filter setup
-Accessories sorted

Been alot of fun researching how to pull this off.

Have a buddy coming over my bday weekend to dive in and see if we cant get her running.

So far its (roughly)

Kelmark basket case '65 corsa with front fender damage - no engine - $1500
Junkyard LM4 Gen 3 all aluminium LS 5.3 - $750
ebay LS6 intake and cam - $750
Harness and ECM - $800
AN lines, fuel pump, filter, regulator - $300
Sorting accessories and mounting - lots of head scratching and - $200

Thats the big stuff, lots of small stuff, lots more small stuff to still sort.

The big question is the diff / tranny. There current health is unknown, and the future health is in question :-)

That dang porsche transaxle is as much as the whole car though - thats the biggest issue!

Updated pics soon...

-Mike

Once some character said "Haven't you got that Corvair finished". Another gear head replied "Now what fun would that be".

As a wise person said "It's the journey, not the destination".

Sportwagon, what did you end up doing with your Kelmark? The 2014+ Silverado v6 LSX option seems like a great modern choice. Smaller, lighter, 285HP and less torque.

My Kelmark ended up somewhere in Montana i think My Crown V8 is now in AZ. But I do have two complete Crown V8 conversion kits 1 - 4 speed and one Power glide both kits have rebuilt transmissions and shifters. I like the new V6 idea would sure add to leg room
