Another interesting mid-engine Corvair sand rail
Posted by: azdave ()

Just saw this interesting Corvair engine in a sand rail. Electric cooling fan, custom shroud, large remote oil cooler and filter, alternator moved, modified heads, etc. Ad say's it's a 64 engine.

Guess this could be a case where electric cooling might work on such an open design but who knows? Maybe is doesn't run well due to an overheat issue?

"it has turning brakes"? I'm not familiar with desert vehicles. Can you apply brakes to just one side?

Yes, helps you carve the corners better when the rail just wants to keep going straight.

Note the transaxle has been turned upside down to use stock engine rotation and get the 4 speeds forward. Electric fans work OK in dune buggies as the buggy is less than half the weight of a car and most of the time you are just idling around with an occasional burst of full throttle for hill climbing. Billy Bruce runs an electric fan on his turbocharged drag racing Corvair as it is only on full throttle for a 1/4 mile. The electric fan does fine on the slow drive back to the pits.
