OT-Graduation day
Posted by: richard1 ()
Date: December 02, 2012 08:03AM

No real Corvair content, but 5 years ago the brother of an employee on my farm was killed (with his wife) in a truck that went off one of our great roads (that I've posted videos of). He left an 18 yr old and 15 year old daughter and 12 and 3 year old sons.

The 18 yr old decided to marry her boyfriend and take care of the 12 year old (probably to till the fields). The brother adopted the 3 yr old.

We took in the 15 year old, taught her how to use the light switch, the faucet (instead of trekking to the river for water), etc. It was amazing how surprised she was to see things like electricity, TV, etc. Anyway, we taught her how to cook (excellent cook), clean, etc., pay her about 50% more than min wage, and told her she had to go to school, so at nights she has gone to school. In her spare time she has invested her pay in computer and English classes, bought her own notebook, etc.

Today she graduates high school. First in her family to ever get past 5th grade. She has applied for a scholarship for the University and wants to go into medicine.

Tonight we go to her graduation in place of her parents.

I admired Richard for his taking a mess out of a junk yard and turning it into a fine Corvair anyone would like to drive. It is even more admirable that he took a child from such humble beginnings of having to be shown how to work a light switch to aspiring to university; what a great tale to tell.

I am sure this girl will amount to something and be admirable in any profession she chooses to enter. My congratulations to her.

Finally got the pictures off the camera. I had gone off to Tarija and spent a few days painting screens, frames, and changing a few.

So here is Sonia's class. As first in her class, she is the one on the top row holding the flag.

Next pic is a lot of painting of screens and frames. Not all screens back up on the windows yet though. The first house painter that quoted wanted $7000. Second was $6700. Third was $1500 plus materials (about $500) if he didn't have to do the screens and frames. So I plugged in the compressor and saved about $5000 in three days of work.

Congratulations to your 'Daughter' Richard. That is an awesome accomplishment.

Your house looks very nice! This is odd but I just sold a used Toyota 4Runner to a lady in Bolivia. It left here on a transport bound for Miami, FL yesterday. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get to her.

A few years ago I was quoted $9k US for a re- roof [16 squares ] on a Mobile home! But I didn't want the Tear-off and re-sheet they insisted on...

$1200 for materials and $600 for 3 guys /2 days... I supervised...

No leaks... only wind damage when it get's over 80 mph gusts! ggg

Once again Richard, congratulations! My roof would have cost 10k to have done. I don't remember the # of squares, but it was 88 bundles of shingles. I did it myself, my neighbor, who's a roofer told me what I needed, lent me a nail gun and helped me lay it out after I ripped it, and fixed few soft spots. I spend a little more than 2k. I remember 88, because I carried everyone of them up the ladders myself, by far the worst part of the job! My shoulder hurts just thinking about it.

Back in 74 when I built this addition on my house in Md I pulled off the two layers of shingles and put on another. No nail guns, just a million or so nails and a Craftsman hammer.
