Seems like a lot of trouble when a ground strap will do. Besides the door is metal isn't it? I'm going with air flow.

The back up lights are in the hatch not the access door so there would be know need. Nothing about the door would touch the plate, it is well inside. It has to be to deflect cooling air. Any one have a 61 assembly manual handy?

The ground tab for the back up lights you are thinking of is in the hatch door.

I would definitely say it had to do with airflow. Didn't they also make the air openings in the engine compartment smaller at some point. Is there a connection between Big vs small air openings, and plate vs no-plate?
