Corvair trolley engine

I don't post much, but I had to share this. Did a search to see if anyone else has shared.

My nephew volunteers at the Poway Midland Railroad Museum in Poway California. They were running an 1880's (formerly) electric trolley on their 1/4 track. My nephew was conducting, but ran up to me to tell me that the trolley has a Corvair engine!!!

Sure enough, tucked underneath and between the two axles is a Corvair engine. I couldn't tell exactly what it was, but I was so excited to see it. It was actually smooth and quiet running and made for an excellent mode of power for the little thing. They must have choose the flat 6 for it's compact height.

The place is worth checking out.

Thanks,
Tony

There used to be one in Cameron Park, CA at Burke's Junction. It was used on weekends for the kids. I don't know exactly how often it runs mowadays but I've seen it in the recent past. I'll check it out and see if I can get a pic.

Right.... that trolley has been around since I lived down the road in '73-4

SDCC and Coyote Clubs have worked on it when they get in trouble..

That Trolley is for the serious Corvair collector. I guess I should buy some tracks first.

It looks like the differential axle output yoke is held firm on one side and drives a sprocket on the other side? Or (hopefully) someone locked-out or spooled the differential so the poor little spider gears aren't wailing around.

Anyone know about the drive config? BTW, the trolley was profiled in the Communique in some detail a while back.
